William Sines Mull, 88, of West Lafayette, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at University Place Skilled Care, West Lafayette.
Bill, as he was known, was born March 24, 1935, in Logansport to the late Harold C. and Margaret S. (Sines) Mull. William grew up in Logansport, graduating in 1954 from Logansport High School. He was active on the basketball and golf teams for the Logan Berries, as well as having served on student council. He was also inducted into the National Honor Society. After graduation, he went to Purdue University, graduating with a pre-medical degree in 1956, he then continued his education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis School of Dentistry. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity. He served his residency at Indiana University Bloomington.
In 1959, he was commissioned in the United States Navy as a Naval Officer, stationed in Jacksonville, Florida where he was a dentist on the battle cruiser, USS Cascade. He served in the Navy for 5 years. In 1962, he met the love of his life in a pharmacy where she worked. He married Cecilia Pereira who preceded him in death in 2019. After their marriage, they lived in Jacksonville, Florida where he was stationed. After his service ended, they settled in South Bend, Indiana, and later Lakeville, Indiana where they raised 2 sons. He owned a dental practice in South Bend and was very involved with the community, starting a soccer league for children in Lakeville and acting as president of the PTA. He refereed for the Michiana Soccer Association. From 1982-1985, he was the founder and director of the Michiana Golf Tournament at Spring-O-Mint Golf Course.
He and his wife retired to Durham, NC in 1997, and lived there until 2015, when they moved to West Lafayette to be closer to family. Bill was involved in volunteer service to his community wherever he lived. He was a member of several organizations and volunteer groups and especially enjoyed volunteering at various libraries. He enjoyed playing golf, reading, traveling, watching sports, and refereeing soccer for kids.
Surviving is his son, Tony (Jennifer) Mull of West Lafayette; 8 grandchildren, Jordan Mull, Nathan (Maria) Mull, Zachary (Samantha) Mull, Caleb (Ireland) Mull, Sarah Mull, Matthew Mull, Bethany Mull, Abigail Mull; and 9 great-grandchildren, Cecilia, Olivia, Cedric, Chérie, Derek, Sullivan, Asher, Sebastian, and June.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Cecilia; his parents, Harold and Margaret; and his son, Kevin Mull.
Memorial Contributions in Bill’s name may be given to Catholic Charities or to Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, July 21, 2023, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909 with Fr. David Buckles officiating.
