William Irwin “Bill” Bennett, 87, West Lafayette, went to be with his Lord and Savior April 3, 2026.
Bill lived his life in service of others. After his time in the Army, he completed a Masters degree in Business at Indiana State University (1967) where he focused on Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management. Bill dedicated his career of 32 years to serving students through Housing and Foodservice programs at Purdue University. He was not only committed to enhancing resident life but also put his staff first. Bill was the type of manager who would not ask somebody to do something he wouldn’t do himself. Each year he would use his day off to work alongside facilities staff; they were shocked when he would grab a scrubber and stick his hand in a toilet to work on a stain. He built lifelong relationships with staff residents who kept in touch until the time of his passing. In honor of Bill’s service in the Residence Halls at Purdue, two scholarships were established in his name: the William I. Bennett Resident Assistantship Endowment and Courtier Achievement Scholarship.
In his retirement, Bill continued his love of service as a tour escort for Imperial Travel and prepared meals for children at the Miller Child Learning Center. Bill was a member of the Purdue University Retirees Association (PURA), was active on several committees, and served as the PURA President during the 2021-2022 academic year. He also fulfilled officer duties as Past President during the 2022-2023 academic year.
Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He lived his life full of God’s love and shared His light with everyone who knew him through laughter. Bill’s love extended beyond the people he touched. He cared deeply for all of God’s creation, especially the neighborhood dogs who adored him.
Bill was born May 23, 1938, in Crawfordsville to Eloise Nina (Layson) and Paul (“Tony”) Larrison Bennett, who preceded him in death. Bill married Linda Anne Hoagland on June 5, 1966, in Indianapolis and she survives. He is also survived by three children: Katherine (Eric) Ellet, Frederick (Christina) Bennett, Barbara (Daniel) Young as well as 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
