William F. Sum

William Francis Sum, 81, of West Lafayette, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2010, at his residence.
Born April 7, 1929, in Washington, Ind., he was the son of the late Joseph and Madeline Fougerousse Sum. He graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1947 and Indiana University. He served in the Army from 1948 to 1952.
On Sept. 25, 1954, he married Mildred M. Denson in Washington, Ind., and she survives.
Mr. Sum was an accountant for Eli Lilly & Co. for 26 years before retiring in 1987.
He was a member of Church of the Blessed Sacrament and volunteered with United Way, Junior Achievement, Mental Health Association, Home With Hope, Central Catholic Athletic Association, Matthew 25 Care and Share Soup Kitchen and Tippecanoe County United Food Pantries. He was also a volunteer bookkeeper for St. Francis Xavier and St. Charles Church in Otterbein.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Michael Sum of West Lafayette, Joseph Sum (wife: Holly L. ) of Winchester, Ky., and Christian Sum (wife: Cynthia) of Zionsville; a daughter, Alice Kasdorf (husband: Harry) of Carmel; and a sister, Mary Jo Vonderschmitt (husband: J. WIlliam) of Washington, Ind.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Ashley Kasdorf, Margaret Perkins, Emily, Beth, Brian, Claire, Frank, Sally and Anna Sum. William was preceded in death by 2 brothers, his twin Gene and Robert J. Sum; a sister, Elizabeth; and a granddaughter, Kathleen B. Sum.
Visitation 5-8 p.m., with Rosary service at 4:45 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Funeral Mass 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47906, with Frs. David Buckles, David Rasner and Ambrose Ziegler officiating. Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Those wishing may contribute to the Matthew 25 Care and Share Soup Kitchen at 612 Wabash Ave., Lafayette, IN 47905.

We were sorry to hear of Bill&s passing! We regret we were not able to attend either the viewing or the funeral. My wife lost her sister-in-law last Friday and her viewing and funeral matched Bill&s.

Bill was a great boss, friend, and co-worker! I believe in his faith in God. I know he deeply loved you, Midge, and the family. He made my experience in Lafayette a very rewarding one.

I thank you, Midge, for having my party, for leaving Lafayette, at your home. I have good memories of working with everyone in the financial department and Bill helped make that happen! I will miss his notes at Christmas time!

May God be your comfort during these days! Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

How sad to have lost your dear husband and father . . . we know you will miss him dearly and wish you all God&s strength to get through your grief.

Bill was such an outstanding family man -- hardly a day passed when I worked with him that I did not hear an anecdote from his heart about his ""group"". Also, he would take the time for those who sought him out, letting them know that he cared. What an honorable man he was, setting such a great example. I was truly blessed to work for him and we both were blessed to have known him.

From our hearts we wish you all a bit of God&s sunshine to calm the grief. We are so sorry for your loss.

When my family thinks of Bill (""Mr. Sum""), we remember a wonderful neighbor with a kind and pleasant personality. The Beaver family appreciated having the Sum family as neighbors. We knew if any of us ever needed anything, we could feel free to ask, and any of the Sum family would try to help. We also know that Kathy&s mother and uncle (Kathryn Linden and Walt Evans) also much appreciated the opportunity to know Bill and his family.

When our children were little, Halloween nights were always a real treat--the kids really looked forward to going to ""the Sums& house"" because of the VERY SCARY (but very cool) boiling pot of witch&s brew (thanks Mike!) and the ""long, steep"" winding steps those little feet climbed to get to the front door!

Although we have moved from ""the old neighborhood,"" we think back with very fond memories. We are all very saddened to hear of Bill&s passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to all the family. With sympathy, the Beavers (Randy and Kathy; Jeremiah, Nathaniel and Amanda).
