Wilbur “Jack” L. Whitehead, 91, of West Lafayette, died Thursday, July 14, 2011, in West Lafayette.
He was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Lafayette to the late John and Marie Peterson Whitehead. He graduated from West Point High School and attended Purdue University and Indiana Business College.
On May 6, 1944, he married Virginia Beutler in Lafayette, and she survives.
Mr. Whitehead retired from Indiana Gas Co. after 28 years of service. He was a member of Stidham United Methodist Church. He served as a Boy Scout leader, walked the Lincoln Trail and was a founding member of the Union Township Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a member of the Tippy Canoe Campers Club, traveled the world with his wife and wintered in Winter Haven, Fla. He enjoyed construction and built several homes in the Lafayette area.
Surviving with his wife are his children, David Whitehead (wife: Sue) of Lafayette and Dianne Clayton (husband: G. R.) of Zionsville; and a brother, Clayton Whitehead (wife: Thelma) of West Point.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, G.R.V. Clayton (wife: Alisan), Craig Clayton, Neil Whitehead (wife: Michelle) and Molly Whitehead; five great- grandchildren Cameron, Carson, Ray, Ty Clayton and Leah Whitehead.
Visitation will be 2 hours prior to a 3 p.m. service Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Rev. David Inskeep officiating. Burial at West Point Cemetery. Preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Weigle. Those wishing may contribute to Stidham United Methodist Church or Shadeland Volunteer Fire Department.
