Walter E. Hawkins, 81, of Lafayette died Tuesday November 6, 2012 at his residence. He was born December 8, 1930, in Lafayette to the late Lloyd and Fae Murdaugh Hawkins. Walter graduated from Shadeland High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Tokyo from 1951-1953 as an MP. On June 27, 1953 he married Betty Cowgill in Linden and she preceded him in death on September 18, 2001. He was a Foreman/Supervisor at AE Staley for 19 years retiring in 1986. He formerly worked for National Homes as a forklift operator for 18 years. Walter was a member of the former Hope Chapel Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed playing cards, being outdoors, spending time with friends and family. Surviving are his children Sheila Parker and John Hawkins wife Julie all of Lafayette, grandchildren Angela Jacquay (Jarah), David Parker (Shannon) and Evan and Megan Hawkins, great grandchildren Peyton and Chloe Parker, Chase Courson, Cameron Runyon and a great grandson due in December. Also surviving is his sister Doris Rees formerly of Clarks Hill. Walter was preceded in death by a brother Russell Hawkins and a sister Margaret Clements.
Visitation will be 5-8 PM Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Funeral Service 1:00 PM Tuesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, Pastor Titus Curtis officiating. Burial will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Those wishing may contribute to the charity of choice.
