My condolence to Nick's family. I took kinetics and reaction engineering courses with Nick. Nick developed an interesting experimental technique for validating the indirect interaction catalytic reactor model. I am saddened by Nick's death.
Philip Angevine left a message on August 24, 2021:
I was deeply saddened by the loss of Nick. As one of his early grad students, I followed him from Yale to Purdue. The Purdue administration knew that he was a "good catch" and treated him like gold -- and rightly so. He was a fine mentor and scientist. He gave me a solid education in catalysis, and he guided me well over the years. Nick gave tricky test problems to weed out the average from the excellent students. If one earned an "A", it was a testament to a good grasp of the material. To the Delgass family: please accept my sincere condolences. We'll all miss Prof. Delgass He was "one of a kind".

I am so thankful for having the opportunity to learn from Professor Delgass. He truly cared for his students and he was clearly deeply knowledgeable about the topic, which for me was advanced chemical kinetics.
Rob Crane left a message on August 22, 2021:
I am forever grateful for Nick’s teaching, mentoring, and advice. I came to study at Purdue specifically because of him, and I cherish that life-shaping decision. I learned so much from him and especially admired his dedication to his family and his profession. He was full of kindness and enthusiasm, and will be greatly missed.

Prof. Delgass was the main reason I chose to work in catalysis, and more specifically computational catalysis with Jeff Greeley. His energy and enthusiasm for the field was evident in our first meeting during the advisor selection phase. He showed great interest in the science we were generating on the computational side of things, and every interaction left me in awe. Thank you for inspiring several generations of researchers. We will aim to take your baton forward and pursue the truth & beauty in catalysis science in your memory. Sincere condolences to the Delgass family and those in the Purdue Catalysis Center and the wider Purdue community.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Nick was the true embodiment of the phrase “a scholar and a gentleman.” His big smile and perennial enthusiasm were a constant reminder that fun truly is an important aspect of doing science. It was a real privilege for me to have crossed paths with him while I was the Head of Materials Engineering at Purdue, and I am sorry to hear of his passing. It’s a great loss for all of us.

Nick was one of the professors who influenced me the most during my time at Purdue. He taught my grad kinetics course...then I was his TA for the undergrad mass and energy balances course...and then he was on my PhD committee! He gave me a lot of advice and encouragement over the years, and I always looked forward to seeing him at the AIChE annual meeting. Rest easy Nick...you will be missed by many Boilermakers! -- JY
