Veneta J. Hazlewood, 82, of Lafayette, passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023 surrounded by her family.

She was born February 12, 1941, in Lafayette, to the late Paul and Mildred (McCauley) Townsend.

Veneta graduated from Richland Township High School (Newtown) in 1959 and St. Elizabeth School of Nursing.

On November 17, 1961, she married James H. Hazlewood in Newtown and he survives.

Veneta worked as a nurse for twenty-five years at Lafayette Orthopedic Clinic until 1995 and she had also worked at both Lafayette area hospitals.

She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, where she served as a deacon, elder and sang in the choir. She belonged to the Women’s Circle, Order of Eastern Star.

Veneta enjoyed genealogy, sewing and fishing.

Surviving with her husband, James H. Hazlewood of Lafayette, is a daughter, Paula (Christopher) Scott of Tucson, AZ, a son, J. Kevin Hazlewood of Lafayette, a sister, Martha (Gregg) Bell of Crawfordsville, and a brother, Jerry M. Townsend of Wallace. Also surviving are grandchildren, K.C. (Jessica) Scott, Alex (Jenna O’Hara) Scott, A.J. (Brittany) Hazlewood and Kyla Hazlewood as well as great grandchildren, Molly Hauk-Hazlewood, Channing Hazlewood, Ian, Jacob, Evelyn, Juliette and Axel Scott.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 1526 S. 18^th St. Lafayette, IN 47905 with Rev. Dr. T. J. Jenney officiating. Burial will follow at Wheeler – Black Cemetery.
