Thomas Edwin Moore passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at IU Health Arnett Hospital. He was born on Thanksgiving Day to the late John and Elnora Moore in Rushville, Indiana on November 22, 1951. He loved being from a small town where his parents instilled a strong work ethic, commitment to community, and an unconditional love for family.
Tom attended his early education in Rushville and graduated high school from Culver Military Academy in 1970. As a member of Culver’s Black Horse Troop, he earned the honor to ride in President Nixon’s Inaugural parade. He attended Ball State University and completed his BS in Accounting at Arizona State University. Additionally, he completed a 3-year financial management certification – BAI at the University of Wisconsin.
Tom started working at Purdue National Bank in 1979 and remained there for 20 years through multiple acquisitions (Bank One and PNC). He finally got to leave his suit and tie behind when he transitioned in June of 1997 to CFO at Lafayette Venetian Blinds (LVB) located in West Lafayette, Indiana. There he advocated passionately for the company and the employees, establishing lifelong friendships along the way. He ended his career back in Banking working with his Purdue Federal Credit Union family until he retired in December of 2018. For decades he joked that in retirement all he wanted to do was mow lawns, so when a maintenance position opened at LVB, he jumped at the chance and spent the next couple years outside happily mowing.
Tom was an athlete and sports fan throughout his entire life. In high school, he was a member of the Wrestling, Tennis and Baseball teams. His baseball talents even earned him a chance to tryout with the Cincinnati Reds. He was an intensely loyal Purdue fan demonstrated by his vast wardrobe of Boilermaker hats, shirts and jackets that were worn daily. On Saturdays in the fall, you could find Tom rooting on his beloved Purdue Boilermakers while graciously helping his friends host some legendary football tailgates. He found both immense joy and at times, tremendous heartache as a Purdue fan. However, he could not have been happier during the recent Final Four run by the 2024 Boilers’ basketball team. He shared his love of sports with his kids and grandkids shooting hoops, playing catch, or going on hikes. Tom was especially proud watching his grandkids’ accomplishments including academics, sports and a multitude of activities. As the youngest person to solo an airplane in Indiana’s Rush County, Tom had a shared love of Aviation with his oldest Grandson.
Dedicated to community service, he joined the Wabash Township Volunteer Fire Department in January of 1980 as a fireman and EMT. Additionally, he held many board positions volunteering with the PEFCU board of directors for 13 years, Wabash Center, Hanna Community Center, The Battle of Tippecanoe Amphitheater and Junior Achievement to name a few.
To know Tom is to know how much he loved his family. Surviving is Cindy Kay Moore, his best friend, soul mate and Wife of 50 years as of April 20, 2024. They fell in love at first sight and have been nearly inseparable ever since.
He is survived by his children and grandchildren who are his proudest accomplishments and his biggest fans:
CHILDREN – Shelly Stewart (Jason), Amy Fisher (Randy), Matthew Thomas Moore (Ali). GRANDCHILDREN – Rylan Thomas Stewart, Alexandria Kay Fisher, Vaughn Thomas Fisher and Thomas James Moore.
Also surviving are his siblings, nieces and nephews: Junior Moore (Mary Ann), Ted Clevenger (Eileen) NIECES/NEPHEWS: Craig Moore (Misty), Angela Anspaugh (Joe), Kristin Brinson (Josh), Rebecca Jane Clevenger, Jacob Thomas Clevenger, Nicki Yaple Robbins (Chris)
Preceding him in death was his younger sister, Jane Ann Moore, who he enjoyed playfully tormenting with every passing moment.
Tom was someone who was easy to love. He was a devoted Husband, loving Father and Grandfather. He was authentic, guided by integrity and a playful spirit that instigated a lot of mischief in the world. He was helpful, kind and people mattered to him.
Following a meaningful accomplishment in 2011, Tom wrote the following: “What I have really learned over the past couple of years is: you always give 100%, make decisions that you don’t necessarily want to make but have to, treat people with respect no matter what the situation, do the right thing no matter if it hurts, be honest in your conversations and finally, understand that people are ultimately the most important aspect of your career and of your life.”
Tom never said goodbye. He just said, “Be Good”. So be good, Dad. Be good, Daddy. Be good, Grandpa. Be good, Popa. Be good, Pappa. Be good, Tommy Ed. You lived a good life and we look forward to seeing you again one day.
