Born Leap Day 1948. Susan and her twin brother Stephen were adopted by Dr. William and Mary Sholty shortly after birth. Sue grew up to enjoy every story her father would tell her. She also loved horseback riding. A graduate from Southwestern High School, she attended Parsons College in Iowa and Indiana Business College in Lafayette.
She married and had two sons. She enjoyed teaching the boys to ride horses, being their Cub Scout Den Leader and helping with 4H projects. A music lover, she always enjoyed listening to her son play saxophone.
Sue took a position with Mayflower Moving Company. In time, she transferred to the Michigan office. She eventually moved to Nashville, TN where she loved listening to independent artists perform. You could find her smiling face behind the jewelry counter at Dillard’s for years, where she enjoyed working with customers.
Sue eventually returned to Lafayette, where she discovered a new passion for crafting. She opened The Craft House on Main Street featuring Basketry By Sue. She later moved her shop to Market Square, opening The Handmade Market. Even after retiring she continued to thrive at crafting and making jewelry, learning how to weave kitchen towels, scarves and so much more. She traveled around Indiana to different festivals and markets, always enjoying the company of other vendors and customers.
While some grandchildren remember weaving baskets and crafting necklaces with her, others remember making wire trees and beaded keychains. Yet another grandchild remembers the look on her face holding a newly born great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. William and Mary Nicholson Sholty and a sister-in-law Mary Sholty. Surviving relatives include her brother, Stephen Sholty, sons, Michael (Brenda) McCaw and W. Andrew McCaw. Grandchildren, Bryce McCaw (Kelly Farrell), Kassie (Frankie) Wolf, Andrew McCaw, and Abigail McCaw. Great grandchildren, Kayden Wolf, Maliah Wolf, and Sarah McCaw.
Memorial Visitation will be Monday, August 14, 2023, from 1pm-3pm at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909.
