Stephen Dale Newhart

Steve (Stephen) Dale Newhart, 42, of Lafayette, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

He was born July 25, 1983, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Victor and Nancy Newhart Walker.

Steve attended McCutcheon High School where he graduated in 2002.

On New Years Eve 2008, A chance encounter at a now infamous New Years Eve party, brought Steve the love of his life, Sara. They were almost inseparable from that fateful evening, and they fell madly in love. Steve and Sara married in an intimate ceremony at their home in 2016 with their closest family and friends there to celebrate with them. A little over a year later, they expanded their family and their love by welcoming their daughter Lillie.

Steve worked as a phlebotomist at St. Elizabeth and Home Hospital, and later as an Assembly Technician for SIA for over ten years.

Steve enjoyed the great outdoors, spending time camping, fishing, canoeing, or sitting around a campfire, sharing few words himself, but surrounded by friends and family with plenty to say. He was a diehard Pacers and Colts fan, enjoyed watching various sports programs every day, and always enjoyed Pat McAfee’s career and show. His beloved Spooner Street League fantasy football group was an annual highlight with friends and family, and the league will forever remember and honor him.

Steve is cherished by his wife, Sara Newhart of Lafayette, Indiana; daughter, Lillie Newhart of Lafayette, Indiana; Mother, Nancy Walker of Lafayette, Indiana; father, Victor Walker of Lafayette, Indiana; brother, Matt Walker of Burlington, Indiana; Sister-In-Law, Brooke Walker of Burlington, Indiana; Niece, Blaire Walker of Burlington, Indiana; Nephew, Graham Walker of Burlington, Indiana; Brother-In-Law, Jeff Gootee of Lebanon, Indiana, Sister-In-Law, Brittney Bauer of Lebanon, Indiana, Nephew, Gunnar Gootee of Lebanon, Indiana;

Many extended family members, and friends that felt like family will forever cherish Steve’s memory and do everything possible to support Sara, Lillie, and the rest of the family.

Stephen was preceded in death by father-in-law, Paul Gootee and mother-in-law, Pat Gootee; grandparents, Bernard “Bernie” Newhart, Norma Koning, Frank Walker, and Nona Walker.

Family and friends will arrange a celebration of life for Steve in his favorite time of year, Summer, with details to be announced at a later time.
