Sequoyah Lynn Bible, of Lafayette, Indiana, was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 16, 1950 and passed away on March 31, 2024, at the age of 73.
Sequoyah was a very devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather; his family was his greatest joy. He is survived by his wife, Julie, whom he married on October 20, 1972. He is also survived by his children: Brenton Sequoyah Bible (Stacy), Amber Lynn Mizimakoski (Stevan), LoSitah Joy Reising (Jason), Celena Kay Badylak (John), and Laynah Brooke Sheets (Austin). He was very proud of each of his 21 grandchildren: Cora, Claire, and Alex Mizimakoski; Mina, Nadia, Greta, Josephine, Francesca, and Eloise Reising; John Sequoyah “Jack”, Henry, and Benjamin Badylak; and Marissa, Hannah, Reina, Bennett, Selah, Abram, Grady, Lydia, and Clark Sheets. Sequoyah is also survived by his mother, Emma Faye Bible, siblings Evert L Bible, Jr (Diana), Tonto Bible (Beth), Tanya Johnson (Ron), and Claude Ross Bible (David McCulloch), sister-in-law Laurie Hockema, brothers-in-law Casey, Jason, and John (Denise) Ricks. He was preceded in death by his father, Evert L Bible, Sr.; nieces Mandie Johnson and Ellen Bible Stacy; great-nephew Bronson Stacy, great-niece Ellie Stacy; father-in-law Paul Ricks, mother-in-law Nancy Ricks, and brothers-in-law Bruce and Jeffrey Ricks.
Sequoyah graduated from Wainwright High School and Purdue University, where he obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He held various positions at Tippecanoe School Corporation over his 46 year career, including custodian, coach (baseball, basketball, and football), teacher (Social Studies, Physical Education, Health, Driver Education), student teacher supervisor, athletic director, interim principal, and TSC’s first Energy Manager, demonstrating his dedication to education, motivation, and leadership. He held several positions at Purdue University including Director of Security for Athletics, Director of the Indiana State Fair Youth Leadership School, Coordinator for the summer Space School program, and was an avid Purdue fan. His experience as a baseball umpire and basketball referee led to a position with the Big Ten evaluating basketball officials.
Sequoyah was a very proud citizen of the Cherokee Nation. His heritage was reflected in his focus on nature and conservation and he was able to restore a natural wetland on the family property. In his free time, he loved playing golf (he had four holes-in-one!), spending time with and attending activities with his grandchildren, traveling to all of the lower 48 states, and gardening.
A memorial service will be held at Stockwell Community Church, 6941 Church St, Stockwell, IN, where Sequoyah was baptized, married, worshiped, and served his Lord and Savior. The visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on April 4, 2024, with the memorial service at 5:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Yorktown cemetery. The family is requesting that you remember Sequoyah by spending time with your loved ones, doing something kind for a neighbor or a stranger, or donating anywhere you choose.
