Sara Madeline Cover Postlethwait
Born January 10, 1920 in Grafton, West Virginia. She graduated from Grafton High School at age 16 and from Fairmount State Teachers College at age 20. She worked as a Home Management Extension Agent in West Virginia for a short time and as librarian in the Purdue Horticulture Department for a few years. She married Samuel Noel Postlethwait March 22, 1941. In addition to her husband, two children survive Sara, John Postlethwait (wife: Nita) of Eugene, Oregon and Robert Postlethwait (wife: Kathi) of Zionsville, Indiana; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her two sisters, Faye Crouch of Raleigh, North Carolina and Alicia Johnson of Salem, Oregon.
Sara lived in Lafayette for 61 years, moving here when Sam accepted a faculty position at Purdue University. She was a member of the Elmwood Church of Christ, where she served as teacher, mentor and friend to hundreds of loved ones. She was a devoted wife and mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; dearly loved. Her interests were broad and included doing good deeds for others (literally thousands of acts of kindness, generosity, and support), botany, travel, home decorating, and reading. She was an avid artist and enjoyed watercolor painting, stained glass and pottery in particular. Her pottery was creative and colorful; her family and others treasure her works.
Sara will be missed be missed by all family and friends, knowing her was to love her.
A private family funeral will be held to be followed in the near future with a memorial service.
