Roberta Patterson, 95
Roberta Patterson, 95, of West Lafayette, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at Westminster Village in West Lafayette.
Born May 14, 1915, in Freeport, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Christine and Clarence Edwards. She married James Edwin Losey of Grinnell, Iowa, in 1938, after meeting him at Cornell University, from which she earned a B.S. in Home Economics.
The Loseys came to West Lafayette in 1943, when he was transferred by the United States Department of Agriculture. Several years later he joined the Purdue University Department of Agricultural Economics, teaching courses in Rural Sociology. He died in 1957.
In 1969, she married Durland H. Patterson, a professor of romance languages at Purdue. They moved into Westminster Village in West Lafayette in 1987.
Mrs. Patterson was a food supervisor in the men?s residence halls at Purdue, as well as in the Horticulture Library.
She had been an active member of First United Methodist Church since 1945, with a commitment to serve all members of the Greater Lafayette community. She served Meals on Wheels, worked in the Church?s thrift shop, sang in the choir, and attended women?s groups. Mr. Patterson died in 1991.
Mrs. Patterson was a member of American Literature Club, Modern Homemakers Extension Homemakers Club, Embroiderers? Guild of America, Old Tippecanoe Quilt Guild, Sigma Kappa Alumnae, and Friends of the West Lafayette Library. She regularly attended concerts of the Tippecanoe Chamber Society, Lafayette Citizens Band, the Bach Chorale, and the Lafayette Symphony. Until her health prohibited it, she also enjoyed Purdue Convocations for many years, with a special fondness for the Chamber Music Series. She also was a lifelong gardener, planting and helping to plant many gardens at Westminster Village.
Surviving are four daughters, Mary Losey of West Lafayette, Robbie Fanning (husband: Tony) of Menlo Park, Calif., Doris Losey of Lafayette and Pam Morford (husband: Norman) of Indianapolis; and two sons, J. Losey of Vancouver, Wash., and Mike Patterson (wife: Sally) of Plainfield.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
The memorial service is at —-, Thursday, July 1, at the First United Methodist Church in West Lafayette. Visitation is after the service at the church. Soller-Baker Funeral Home assisted the family.
