Robert D. McDaniel, 48, of Lafayette, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at his residence.
Born Feb. 4, 1962, in Lafayette, he was the son of Dan and Vivian McDaniel.
He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1981.
On April 9, 1983, he married Karen Egelhoff in Lafayette.
Mr. McDaniel worked as a crane operator at Alcoa for 24 years.
He enjoyed drawing, woodworking, horseshoes and spending time with family.
Surviving with his wife and parents are a daughter, Rebecca McDaniel Reynolds of Lafayette; two sons, Robert McDaniel Jr. and Jarrett McDaniel, both of Lafayette; two grandchildren, Lilith and Avaline Reynolds of Lafayette; and three brothers, Gary McDaniel (wife: Bridget) and Danny McDaniel, both of Lafayette, and Scott McDaniel (wife: Laura) of Alabama.
Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Frank Egelhoff of Lafayette; a sister-in-law, Tami Funkhouser of Lafayette; 3 nieces, Natalie Stevens, Kayla Garrison and Sonya Carey, all of Lafayette; and a nephew, Adam McDaniel of Lafayette.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Funeral Service is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Ann Catholic Church, Father Michael Dominick officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness I feel for you and your family at this time. Rob was my best friend growing up and he always had a way of making people laugh when he was around. He would kid and joke around but he also wore his heart on his sleeve. I don&t think many people knew that he was a very sensitive and caring person. He would act tough sometimes but he was a softy at heart. He truly loved his wife Karen and knew how lucky he was that she had chosen him to share her life with. He was always more concerned what others thought or felt, than about his own feelings. I regret that I did not get to see him more often the last twenty years, but I am happy for the times we shared growing up. He was an awesome artist and had a great imagination. We would spend hours trying to invent something no one had ever thought of before and he would make drawings that were very accurate to our ideas. Unfortunately, there wasn&t a big need for things like a toaster radio or a riding vacume cleaner. One time we decided to become singers after hearing a Beach Boys song and spent half the day harmonizing in a garage before we decided we should stick to riding bikes and skateboards.
But now he is gone from all the lives he left his mark upon and all I can think about is how lucky I was to have been able to call him my friend and how empty the world is without him.
So long friend.

ROSE AND I WORKED WITH ROBBY FOR A WHILE WHILE IN SHIPPING HE WAS ALWAS A LOT OF FUN TO WORK WITH WE FOUND OUT LATER THAT OUR BOYS RAN AROUND TOGETHER THEN ENDED UP IN THE ARMY (TEX) IS STILL IN. My thoughts and prayers are with teh McDaniel family at this time. Rob&s brother Gary is my brother in law. I have known Rob and his family for 23 years. My heart truly goes out to this wonderful family. His wife Karen and her 3 children, my heart breaks for you. God will give you the strength to go on. To Rob&s parents, Vivian and Dan, you are in my thoughts every single day. There is no other pain than the loss of a child. I have adored the both of you since I first met you. You are truly wonderful people and you have been amazing parents and I know this because of the wonderful children you have raised. My thoughts and prayers will continue to be with you and I prayer that God gives you the strength to make it through this time in your lives.
