Robert Frederick Coates, 27, of West Lafayette passed away unexpectedly on June 17, 2026, in Lafayette.
Rob was born September 15, 1998, in Bedford, Indiana to David B. and Sally J. Coates. Robert was a graduate of William Henry Harrison High School.
While in High School, Robert was an active member of the wrestling and lacrosse teams. He wrestled varsity three of those years and made many close friends during that time.
Along with his parents, David and Sally, Robert is survived by his brother Cameron Coates; aunt, Betsy Laub; and cousins, Scott (Sara) Laub, Lynn (Tony) Koza, Greg (Susie) Coates, and Suzanne Coates.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Fred and Dorothy Smith and Bob and Betty Coates; his uncle, Ronald Laub and his uncle and aunt, Bob and Carol Coates.
Like his immediate family, Rob had a strong love of dogs, with one of his best friends being his labrador retriever that he named Simba. Whether going on long walks, car rides, or splashing in the lake, they were inseparable. Rob loved family celebrations and gatherings and was always entertaining everyone with his great sense of humor. Summertime weekends at the lake spent boating and tubing behind the boat were among his favorites. He was even happier when he could invite several friends to join in his activities. We will remember Rob for all the smiles, laughs, and happy times that he gave us.

The way we crossed paths was horrible, but when we actually met; I've never seen more of myself in another individual (& vise-versa). We had been told so many lies about each other, yet the facade stopped as soon as we actually came in contact & treated each other as humans. Then, you became one of my best friends & I called you "brother." I love you bro, this one hits really close to home. Go take care of our lady. I'm glad you have her on the otherside. I'll catch up with y'all when its my time. I'm just thankful for the time we got & the opportunity to see the truth. Thank you.
