Richard Herman Smith, 71, of Lafayette, passed away on Friday, November 18, 2022 at Majestic Care.

He was born January 29, 1951, in Lafayette, to the late Herman and Victoria (Batta) Smith.

Richard graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1970 and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corp.

On November 6, 1976, he married Deborah Gunckle in Lafayette and she survives.

Richard worked as a security guard at St. Elizabeth Hospital and later in maintenance at Purdue University.

He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and enjoyed fishing, hunting and genealogy.

Surviving with his wife, Deborah K. Smith, are son, Richard Smith, Jr., daughter, Rebecca (husband Carl) Fassnacht, son, Rayburn Smith, daughter, Shirley Arnold, daughter, Jeanette Webb and a sister, Elizabeth Miller. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren.

A celebration of Richards life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3224 Jasper St. West Lafayette, IN 47906.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Kidney Foundation.

I miss the days where me him me Herman smith had a good times of laughter and joy and when he was on his death bed I remember him teasing me when his hands and I held his hand before we left and then the next day he passes away I know I loved the good times we had as he is still my step grandpa
