Ray Anne Shrader, 87, passed away at 2:16 a.m. on Monday, December 25, 2017 at Franciscan Health Hospital. She was born on February 18, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to the late Robert Shrader and Dorothy Moore Shrader. Dr. Shrader was graduated from University of Utah – Salt Lake City in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree. She majored in Physical Education with a minor in Technical Theatre and was initiated into Mortar Board – the National Collegiate Honor Society. She taught for seven years in Salt Lake City until accepting an assistantship at the University of Illinois-Champagne where she obtained her master’s degree with a major in Health Education. In 1959 Dr. Shrader joined the Purdue Department of Physical Education for Women and took a year off to obtain her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975 with a major in physical education and specialties in motor learning and test and measurements. While in the Women’s Physical Education Department, she served as head academic advisor, taught professional classes, coached tennis, volleyball and refereed basketball games. She also served as a faculty fellow for Twin Pines co-operative house and was advisor for the Triton Swimming Club. Dr. Shrader served as vice chair of the College of Liberal Arts Senate, a member of the University readmissions committee, and chaired the university grade appeals committee. Upon retirement in 1993 she was named Professor Emerita. In 2007 a former student, Dr. Joy Greenlee, established the Maver-Shrader Scholarship to recognize long and distinguished Purdue careers of Professors Jane Maver and Ray Anne Shrader who served as gifted teachers and supportive mentors. In support of her long-time passion for theater arts, Dr. Shrader established the Professor Emerita Ray Anne Shrader Education in Scenery Engineering and Technical Direction fund and the Professor Ray Ann Shrader Workshop Fund in the Department of Theatre. Also established was the Professor Emerita Ray Anne Shrader Health and Kinesiology Undergraduate Travel Fund.
Surviving are members of her adopted family Elisabeth Ann Maver, Elise Maver Squillini, Melissa Maver and Robert Mitchell Maver. A memorial service will occur at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Purdue Foundation at 403 West Wood Street, West Lafayette, IN 47907 for the following: Education in Scenery Engineering and Technical Direction Fund and/or the Health and Kinesiology Undergraduate Travel Fund and/or the Workshop Fund in the Theatre Department.
