Randall Wayne Fields II

Randy Fields, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022, after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. He was 50 years old. He was born April 2, 1971, in Louisville, KY, a son of Randall and Anita Fields. He was raised in New Castle, IN, where his father was a radiologist. He attended 2 years at New Castle High School and 2 more years at Muncie Burris High School where he graduated in 1989.  He was a member of the high school swim team and a member of the theater program. One of his most treasured memories was working as a camp counselor at YMCA Camp Crosley where he taught sailing, swimming, and water skiing. He also worked as a lifeguard one summer at Mount Summit State Park. He graduated from Ball State University with a B.S. degree in Computer Science in 1994. He then went on to achieve a Master’s Degree in Computer Science at Clemson University in 1996. While at Clemson, he spent most weekends in Greenville, SC being cared for by his Aunt Maggi and Uncle Don Bailey. During these two years his first cousin Lainey became like a little sister to him.

He moved to San Diego, CA and worked a couple of years at Qualcomm. He then moved to Richmond, VA to support his wife, Kati Rowe while she was in medical school. He programmed for Capital One. His son Jackson was born in Richmond. He then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where Kati did a four-year residency in Dermatology. Here his son Christopher was born. While in Salt Lake, he worked for a small software company and wrote a program for the Navy that earned the company a million dollars. He moved to San Diego, CA where he divorced, and he again worked for Qualcomm for ten years. He loved living in San Diego where he enjoyed rollerblading around Mission Bay, boogie boarding on Pacific Beach, and going to eat breakfast with his sons when they visited. While living in San Diego, he spent many holidays with his cousin Susan Davis and her daughters Raleigh and Logan who became like nieces to him. He attended the Unitarian Church where he made several good friends.

He moved to Walnut Creek, CA to be with his sons while they went to high school. He received his diagnosis of cancer in January 2017. While in Walnut Creek, his father and sons lived with him and cared for him. He hosted many gatherings with his children and their friends. After his sons’ high school graduation, he moved to Lafayette, IN to be closer to family.

He loved to make music and sing karaoke. Wherever he lived, he found a group of friends with whom to play Dungeons and Dragons. One of his favorite things was to watch Science Fiction and Horror movies. His childhood friends, Doug Hancock and Craig Thomas were in constant support throughout his life. His step-sister, Staci Slavin, and brother, Scott were extremely helpful while he was battling cancer. Randy was a beloved father, brother, and son, and a man of courage and integrity. He had a lot of love to give to his family and friends.

He is survived by his sons Christopher and Jackson Fields of Lafayette; his parents Dr. Randall (Myra Jo) Fields Sr. of Lafayette and Anita Lee (John) Smiley of Muncie; 2 siblings, D. Scott (Kim) Fields of Battle Ground and Staci (Steve) Slavin of Muncie; grandmother, Camille Martin of Louisville, KY; his friend and ex-wife, Dr. Kati (Tom) Clyman; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Elaine (Stamper) Fields and grandfather, Damond Scott Martin.

A Celebration of Life will be held 12:00 pm, Sunday, May 29, 2022, at the Whitaker Inn, 702 W. 500 North, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
