Rachel Green Powell, 70, Lafayette, formerly of Crown Point, IN died November 3, 2013 at Westpark Rehabilitation and Care Center in Indianapolis where she was recovering from treatments for lymphoma. She was preceded in death by her parents Forrest L. and Mary E. Green, Crown Point, IN. Survived by her loving husband Jerry L. Powell, Lafayette, her beloved son Jeremy B. Powell (Heather) of Lebanon, IN, and the light of her life, her grandson, Jayden B. Powell. Also surviving are her loving sisters, Mary Springer (Ted), Lafayette and Alice Ray (Harlan), Crown Point, IN, and nephews, nieces, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She will be missed, in particular by her niece, Shelley Barrett, her husband Tony and her grandnephew, Xander Barrett of Romney, IN. Rachel was a member of Immanuel UCC, Lafayette. Rachel was a graduate of Ball State University and a long time third grade teacher. She spent most of her teaching career in the Lake Central School Corporation in Lake County, IN where she made many life-long friends. She enjoyed reading, baking, gardening, going to Curves with her friends and playing computer games. Rachel was a kind, quiet, loving, unassuming person. She never complained during her eight-month battle against lymphoma. She died as she lived, with quiet dignity. She made many loving friends during her lifetime and even made new friends the last months of her life. Rachel's family wishes to thank the staff, in particular the aides, at West Park Rehabilitation Center for their loving care of and kindness to Rachel. Rachel was loved by many and will be missed. Per her wishes, Rachel was cremated. There will be a private, family memorial service. A Remembrance of her life will be held here in Lafayette and in Lake County. Dates will be determined later.
