Phillip M. Sparks, 69, of Lafayette, died at 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.
Born Jan. 25, 1940, in West Lafayette, he was the son of the late Harley and Hazel Sparks. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1957 and served in the Navy.
On July 1, 1989, he married Amy J. Poor in Lafayette, and she survives.
Mr. Sparks was a groundskeeper at Edwood Glenn Country Club for 20 years before retiring in 2002. Prior to that he had worked at Sears on the Levee for several years and was also the manager of the Auto Service Department. He had also worked for Smith Candy and Tobacco, and managed Goodnight Service Centers.
He attended Trinity United Methodist Church, and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and Edwood Glenn Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf and maintaining his yard.
Surviving with his wife are five children; two sisters, Zella Thewlies of West Lafayette and Ola Hurtt of Avon; and a brother, Richard Sparks (wife: Judy) of Plainfield.
Also surviving are several grandchildren. Phillip was preceded in death by 6 brothers and 2 sisters.
Visitation will be 2 hours prior to a 2:30 p.m. memorial service Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909, the Rev. Dr. James Morin officiating. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to the Purdue University Center for Cancer Research, Hansen Life Sciences Research Building, Room 141, 201 S. University St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2064.

I have been thinking of you and Phil over the weeks.

I was planning to come down this afternoon but decided I need to stay with Bob. He was recently diagnosed with cancer and starts his treatments Tuesday. Sometimes, he gets confused, and I&m not sure what he will do. Unfortunately, today is one of those days.

Hope to see you soon. Missed you at the end of the "season."

uncle phil was a great guy he will be missed he helped me when paul jr. died in 1986 of cancer. i moved to indiana 21 years ago to be closer to my dad he and my dad lived together at the time.he was in love with my teacher. and my brother ed. also.he loved golf and wanted to always be as good as tiger.he helped me and my brother when paul.my father passed.he had a great personallity and was always smiling.if i could be half. the man my father and his brother were. i would be blessed.i miss my father and phil will never be forgotten. my dad was at the gates a waiting his best friend.along with billy aka doris ponto.who i will always love and have in my heart.my heart goes out to amy his love of his life and his best friend in the world. my heart goes out to you.god bless.and remember his big sparks smile...............

Dear Amy,
What a joy it has been to be your neighbors! Sparky was the "light" of the neighborhood and, I believe, self-proclaimed keeper of all the goings-on. He could always fill us in on what was happening, who was doing what, who had what car, and who wasn&t behaving themselves. He is in a much better place, but will be greatly missed!

You have been a wonderful "saint" during his illness. Rest assured you did all the right things to make his final days as comfortable as possible. You are a strong, amazing woman and the Lord will give you the strenght to carry on. Allow yourself to grieve - you need to. We are here for you and will do whatever we can to help you through this process.
