Penny Lee (Edmundson) Welsh Prather, passed away Friday, September 23, 2022, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis after a year-long battle with leukemia and lymphoma.
She was born November 16, 1963, in Lafayette to John Ertle and Carol Ann (Gard) Edmundson. She was a 1982 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and continued her education at Purdue University earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
Penny was a well-known and loved teacher around the Lafayette area, teaching at Glen Acres, Vinton and most recently Edgelea. She was best known by students and school staff for her many pairs of shoes and how they always matched her shirt. She was the Queen of her classroom.
She was a huge “Peanuts” and Disney fan and always said that her dream retirement career was going to be “The Fairy Godmother” at Disney.
Penny is survived by her 2 children, son, J. Welsh of Hebron, and daughter, Shelby (Michael) Luedtke of Clearwater, FL; parents, John and Carol Edmundson; brother, Aidyn Edmundson; sister, Tammy (Jr) Guenther; 3 special nieces, Emily (Trevor) Claton, Kayla (Ben) Fuqua, and Ashley (Nathan) Eads. She was known as Nana to grandsons, Ronnie and Johnathen Welsh; and great-nephews, Bentley and Remington; great-nieces, Paisley, Audrey, and Emery. She is also survived by her step-sons; Ben Prather and Eli (Mistie) Prather, and their children, Marshall, Remington, and Henley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael G. Welsh and husband, Marty Prather.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Penny’s name may be given to sponsor a classroom of the donor’s choice.
A memorial visitation will be from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm, Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Soller-Baker, Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909.
All guests are encouraged to wear their favorite “Snoopy” shirt and jeans or cool tennis shoes.
