Pearl A. Davis, age 96, quietly entered heaven on March 29, 2023, at Westminster Village in West Lafayette, IN. Pearl was born near Princeton, IL on October 30, 1926, to her late parents Goebel and Alice Purvis Miller. After high school graduation in 1944, she moved to Chicago to live with an aunt while working at Montgomery Ward in downtown Chicago. While in Chicago at a church event, she met John E. Davis, who was home on leave from the service. They were married in Galloway Chapel (Pearl’s father was the minister) near Marshfield, IN on June 22, 1945. John passed away on July 29, 2007. They were married for 62 wonderful years.
Pearl and John were the proud parents of three daughters, Virginia (Ginny) Freeman, Mary Gear, and Brenda Fisher (deceased February 13, 2021). Surviving are grandchildren Marsha Freeland (Dennis), Donna Masonis (Alden), James Fisher (Mandy), Amy Hamilton (Monte Moore), Matthew Fisher (Cheri), and Jason Freeman (Tiffany). She was preceded in death by husband, John, daughter, Brenda, two sons-in-law, Bill Freeman and Joe Gear, as well as her siblings, Fred Miller, Harvey Miller and Eva Harper, and several nieces and nephews.
Pearl and John were very active in their children and grandchildren’s activities over the years. They attended many ballgames, plays, car washes and graduations, etc.
Pearl and John spent many winters in Venice, Florida and loved to travel over the years. They cut and sold firewood during the year in order to afford their many memorable trips to Europe, The Holy Lands, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska and many states within the United States. They loved to take cruises. They enjoyed many fun times with family and friends on their boat at Lake Freeman and in Florida while fishing, skiing, and enjoying the sunshine.
They lived most of their marriage in the Delphi area until building a house and moving to Woodcliff Acres outside Lafayette in 1965. John was working at Alcoa and Pearl was one of the original employees at the State Farm Insurance Regional Office in West Lafayette, starting there September 1961 and retiring April 1987. They worked hard to maintain a beautiful yard, garden, and land above the Wabash River, teaching their family a very strong work ethic. Pearl was active for many years in the Professional Secretaries International organization especially while working at State Farm. She was also an active member of the Delta Zeta Chapter of Psi Iota Xi.
After John’s death in 2007, Pearl moved to Westminster Village in 2008. She always had many flowers and quickly took charge of the flowerbeds outside Bldg. A. She was well known as ‘the flower lady’ for many years until moving in 2021 to the Healthcare Center in Westminster. Pearl also enjoyed watching birds, especially hummingbirds and cardinals.
Pearl and John were longtime active members of The Federated Church in West Lafayette. They helped for many years to maintain the landscape of the church. They were avid Purdue fans.
Memorial contributions may be given in Pearl’s name to The Federated Church, 2400 Sycamore Lane, West Lafayette, IN 47906 or to the Westminster Employee Gift Fund for the devotion and love they showed Pearl while she was in independent living and especially while in the Health Care Center. The donation should be made out to Resident Council, c/o Employee Gift Fund Committee, 2741 N. Salisbury Street, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Westminster Village and all the wonderful staff who became like a family to Pearl and her family over the years she lived at Westminster.
