Opal L. (Smith) Smith, 88, of Lafayette passed away on Thursday evening, December 17, 2015. Born June 18, 1927, in Tazewell, TN, she was the daughter of the late William and Ida (Caylor) Smith. She was married to William C. Smith for 67 years and he survives. She was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and worked at General Telephone, Deckers and retired from Henriott Insurance. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and American Legion Post 11 Aux. She enjoyed bird watching, gambling, gardening, and was a fabulous cook. Opal is survived by her three children, Judy Perkins (Tom), Karen Peterson (Phil) all of Lafayette and Steve Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC; sister, Lillian Davis, of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Lori Sailors (Duane) of Logansport, Kyle Peterson (Billie) of Monticello, Jill Benefield (Donnie) of Madison, AL, Kasey Prickel (Adam) of Brownsburg, Tyler Smith of Lafayette and Tanner Smith of Myrtle Beach SC; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgan, Drew, Reis, Taylor, Kayton, Lily, Collin and Sam. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at 3:00 PM on Monday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Fr. Gerald Borawski officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Opal’s memory.
