Myrtle L. “Mert” Strain, 79, of Lafayette, died at 5:08 AM Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
She was born May 21, 1932, in Scottsburg, to the late Hager and Estelle Mitchell Garriott.
She graduated from Salem High School in 1950 and attended Indiana Central now the University of Indianapolis.
On June 14, 1953 she married Elbert R. “Bert” Strain in Scottsburg and he survives.
Mert was a member of Christ Church, John Purdue Club, President?s Council, Wabash Valley Water Color Society, and Water Color Society of Indiana.
Caring, compassionate and classy are a few words used to paint a picture of a women who lived her life full of color. Mert had a curiosity and drive for learning that kept her engaged in many activities such as studying the Bible, painting and world travel. Her continual optimism and generous spirit was not only contagious, but influential in her ability to shine the love of God and maintain close friendships. She showed great gratitude for even the smallest of things; however she was the beautiful blessing to many.
Surviving along with her husband are two daughters Katie S. Riggs (husband Roy) of North Salem and Karen M. Norman (husband Pookie) of Lafayette; a brother Hager Garriott Jr. (wife Marie) of Scottsdale, AZ and 5 grandchildren Levi (wife Brittany), Sara-Ruth, Darby, Lauren, and Micah.
She was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 10 am till the service at 11:00 am Monday, October 24, 2011 at Christ Church 3616 S. 9th St. Lafayette, IN 47909 with Rev. Dr. Ronald Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute to the donor?s charity of choice.
