Milton W. Roggenkamp, MD, 98, of West Lafayette, arrived at his eternal resting place, Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Franciscan Health East, Lafayette.
He was born August 30, 1924, in Shively, KY to the late Albert V. and Elizabeth O. (Altes) Roggenkamp. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth I. Wenning, in Palmyra, IN on July 2, 1945. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2017.
Milton graduated from Milltown High School in 1942. Of the 8 boys in his class, all served in World War II. Milton enlisted in the United States Navy, in 1942, trained as an Aviation Radioman, and earned the wings of a combat air crewman in the Douglas Dauntless Dive Bomber. He served in the Pacific-American Theater and was honorably discharged in January, 1946.
Ruth and Milton welcomed their first son in November, 1946.
Following his time in the Navy, Milton was briefly employed at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Depot, but decided to take advantage of the education benefits of the G.I. Bill, which Congress had enacted for returning serviceman, and he began his undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in February, 1946. He majored in Chemistry and Pre-Medical studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in June, 1948. He was accepted into the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1948 and graduated with his Medical Degree in June, 1952.
In March 1952, the family welcomed their 2nd son.
Dr. Roggenkamp served his internship at Riverside County General Hospital in Riverside, CA from July 1952 through June 1953. Following his internship, the Roggenkamp family returned to Indiana where he opened his office for the general practice of Medicine from 1953 – 1955.
Their 3rd son was born in February, 1954.
He then returned to IU School of Medicine, assumed his residency in Pathology from 1955 to 1959, and became Board certified in 1959 in both Anatomical and Clinical Pathology.
April, 1958, saw the couple’s 4th son born.
Milton practiced Pathology in Bradenton, FL from 1959 – 1966. He and his family again returned to Indiana in 1966, when he formed the Medical Diagnostic Services Group with Dr. Paul Elliot for the practice of Pathology in 1966. He was on the active medical staff of Lafayette Home Hospital in the Pathology Department from 1966-1992 and also served as Director of Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Service of Memorial Hospital in Logansport from 1967 until his retirement in 1992.
He was confirmed in the Bethlehem German Evangelical Church in Louisville, KY in 1937 and attended Covenant Church in West Lafayette. He was an Emeritus member of the Indiana State Medical Association, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and an Emeritus Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
He enjoyed traveling, mountain hiking, studying history from the Big Bang to the present, reading, and gardening. Above all he cherished time spent with his family.
He is survived by his 3 sons, Gary N. (Sarah) Roggenkamp, of Taylors, SC; Mark Roggenkamp, of Lafayette; and Brett (Paula) Roggenkamp of Lone Tree, CO; a grandson, Matthew; and a sister, Dr. Phyllis Roggenkamp Irwin of Fishers.
Along with his wife, Ruth Roggenkamp, and his parents, Albert and Elizabeth, he was preceded in death by a son, Brian Roggenkamp; a grandson, John Roggenkamp; and a brother, Norman Roggenkamp.
Visitation will be from 2:30 pm until time of Memorial service at 3:30 pm, Friday, June 2, 2023, at Soller-Baker, West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
A reception will follow at Covenant Church, 211 Knox Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
Burial will be held at a later date at Milltown Cemetery in Milltown, IN.
