Maxine Fay Wilson, 86, of West Lafayette, died at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at Seton Specialty Hospital in Lafayette.
She was born March 25, 1924, in Manhattan, Kan., and was the daughter of the late Roy and Agnes Nyberg Wilson. She received her bachelor?s degree and was awarded Distinguished Alumnus from Kansas State University.
She was former director of foods for Purdue University?s women?s residences, assistant director of housing and professor emeritus of Purdue?s department of restaurant, hotel and institutional tourism management.
She was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Lafayette.
Among her accoplishments were, co-author of “Cooking for Fifty,” former speaker of the house for the American Dietetic Association, Spec Hominum Award from the National Sanitation Foundation and received a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996.
Her volunteer service to the community has been recognized by awards from United Way, YWCA, Tippecanoe Child Care, Hanna Community Center, and Community Health Center. She is responsible for the design of many institutional kitchens in churches and community organizations and was known as the “Kitchen Lady.”
Surviving is a twin sister, Arlene Wilson of West Lafayette.
Also surviving is her “Adopted” family the Townsends.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 510 Lindberg Road, West Lafayette, IN 47906, with Pastor Joseph Townsend officiating. I had the honor of working with Maxine when I was the Director of the American Red Cross from 1995-2008. We worked on some United Way projects together. What a bright, intelligent star she was in this community. She was truly a woman to be honored and respected. Her determination and spirit will be missed. My sincerest condolences.
