Larry E. Polley passed away peacefully at Mulberry Health on June 26, 2023, where he had been a Memory Care patient since April 26, 2021. He was born in Fulton County on December 5, 1939, to the late Edward and June Fletcher Polley. He was a 1958 graduate of Rochester High School where he played basketball.
During the summer and after he graduated, he worked for his brother, Ward, for Dean Milk Company in Logansport, IN.
On April 22, 1966, he married Judith Ann McKeever Phillips at Congress Street Methodist Church in the chapel where they were 55 plus years members.
He was active in the Lafayette Jaycees and Lafayette Lions Club and was a member of the Lafayette Board of Realtors. He started his work career at Dean Milk, Stark & Wetzel and Spiker Oil Company. He then became a Lafayette firefighter obtaining the rank of Lieutenant and retiring after 25 years. On his off days, he worked at Lafayette Glass Co., Inc. as an outside salesman, drove a school bus for Lafayette School Corporation and sold real estate for several companies. He was followed on the Lafayette Fire Department by his son, Greg Phillips and his son-in-law, John Butler.
He always kept busy whether tinkering in his garage, doing things around the house or helping neighbors. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Larry never met a stranger and was always the “life of the party”! He enjoyed his swimming pool and traveling in his RV’s. He especially enjoyed his trip out West and going to Naples, FL, for the winter months where he made many friends.
His grandkids were most important of all to him and he enjoyed attending all of their events whether it was sports or otherwise. Family pets, Candy, Tasha, Heidi and Coco, all dogs, were a big part of his life.
Surviving are his wife, Judy Polley, his son, Greg Phillips, Lafayette, his daughters Gretchen (Todd) Tyrie, Rock Hill, SC, Brenda (Shawn Scott, fiancé) Downs, Rochester, IN, Natalie (Francisco) Negreros, Ave Maria, FL. His grandchildren, Brock (Mimi Graham, fiancé ) , Butler, Allyson Butler, Grant (Sarah) Downs, Drake (Aditi) Ashok-Downs, Evan Downs, Latecea Negreros and Adriann Negreros. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chuck and Karen Fiedler, Hilton Head, SC and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Lucy and Micah Downs.
Preceding him in death were his brother and sister-in-law, Ward and Donna Polley, his parents, his son-in-law, John Butler, his son-in-law, Jimmy Downs and his in-laws, Don & Josephine McKeever .
He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
Friends may visit Friday June 30,2023 from 1:00pm- 3:00pm service to follow at 3:00pm Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd, Lafayette, In 47909. Last alarm service at 2:45pm. Family request memorial contributions to given to Almost Home Humane Society 1705 S. Second St. Lafayette, In 47905 in Larry’s memory.
