Joseph Claffey, 87
Joseph Claffey, 87, of West Lafayette, died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at University Place.
Born Nov. 23, 1922, in Mishawaka, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Lena Hans Claffey.
He graduated from Valparaiso University and the National Boy Scout Training School in 1949 and was employed in the professional service of the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years, serving as Scout Executive for Harrison Trails Council, Lafayette, and Two Rivers Council St. Charles, Ill. He retired in 1985 as Indiana Area Director.
Mr. Claffey was a World War II veteran, with two Pacific tours in the Marine Corps from December 1941 to October 1945, and served in combat at Guadalcanal, Rendova, New Georgia and Guam.
On Aug. 7, 1950, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Geisler, and she survives.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the John Purdue Club, Elks Club, National Association of Eagle Scouts and Order of the Arrow, and served as a board member of the Sagamore Council, BSA.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Kevin Claffey of Indianapolis; and a sister, Doris Marosz of South Bend.
