Joseph Claffey, 87
Joseph Claffey, 87, of West Lafayette, died at 5:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, at University Place.
Born Nov. 23, 1922, in Mishawaka, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Lena Hans Claffey.
He graduated from Valparaiso University and the National Boy Scout Training School in 1949 and was employed in the professional service of the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years, serving as Scout Executive for Harrison Trails Council, Lafayette, and Two Rivers Council St. Charles, Ill. He retired in 1985 as Indiana Area Director.
Mr. Claffey was a World War II veteran, with two Pacific tours in the Marine Corps from December 1941 to October 1945, and served in combat at Guadalcanal, Rendova, New Georgia and Guam.
On Aug. 7, 1950, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Geisler, and she survives.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, the John Purdue Club, Elks Club, National Association of Eagle Scouts and Order of the Arrow, and served as a board member of the Sagamore Council, BSA.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Kevin Claffey of Indianapolis; and a sister, Doris Marosz of South Bend.
No visitation. Graveside service 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at Highland Cemetery in South Band. Memorials may be made to Sagamore Council Boy Scouts of America, Kokomo, IN; St. James Lutheran Church; or charity of choice. Send condolences to www.soller-baker.com

Betty, Kevin, and Doris, I would like to send my condolences to you all. Betty, Joe was a good friend to my Dad, and as I remember pretty nice guy when I was little. I was so nice to see you both you and Joe at St. James. I know that he is in a better place now and will be watching over everyone

I was very sorry to hear of Joe&s passing. I knew Joe from the Elks club. He was one of my playing partners in the 15 or so years I was a member there. He befriended me when I first joined in the early 1980&s. Although he was my fathers age, I always thought of Joe as a friend. There was no one that was easier to play golf with. He was a true gentleman, and had the grace and sense of humor that made it a pleasure to spend the 3 to 4 hours with it took to play a round of golf. I don&t belong to The Elks anymore, but, whenever I visit to play golf, I always think of and ask about Joe. I&m sorry I didn&t get to see him before he became so ill. I will miss Joe, but whenever I visit The Elks I will have fond memories of Joe and the good times we shared on the golf course. Please accept my condolences, but know that Joe is in a better place and he left many friends that knew it was a privlilege to call him a friend.
