John Francis Nelson, 88, of Lafayette, passed away at his residence on Thursday, April 6, 2023.

He was born October 17, 1934, in Lafayette, to the late Ralph and Amy (Ricketts) Nelson.

After high school, John served and retired from the United States Navy as an Aircraft Mechanic.

He was a member of the VFW Post #1154, American Legion Post #492, the Moose Lodge, and the 40 & 8 where he enjoyed socializing.

Surviving are daughters, Amy Ross of Lafayette and Norma Jean (husband Tom) Swann of FL, sons, Romeo Nelson of FL, Ricardo (wife Pearl) Nelson of VA, and Jeff Schumacher of Wheatfield, a sister, Iris Smith of FL. As well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by a son, Chris Schumacher, a daughter, Cindy Schumacher, and sweetheart, of 40 years, Mary E. Cole. Also surviving are Mary’s children, Dawn Warf of AZ and Michelle (husband Mark) Hamm of Lafayette.

Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the time of the service at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 14, 2023, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, with Rev. Joseph Park Jr. officiating.  Interment will follow at Battle Ground Cemetery, Battle Ground, IN.
