Joe W. Sliger, 72, of Lafayette, passed away Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Martin Medical Center in Stuart, FL. He was born May 4, 1942, in Hartsville, TN, to the late Joe and Ruby Holder Sliger. Joe graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1961. He was a man of many talents and was well loved in his home Community in Indiana as well as his vacation community in Nettles Island, Florida. He valued family above all else and was a proud and respected veteran of the United States Marine Corps. serving from August 4, 1961 to August 3, 1965. On February 4, 1967 he married Diane Hardesty in Rockville, MD and she survives. Retiring after 42 years, Joe was an operating engineer and superintendent for both Faubers Construction and Milestone Contractors. He was a member of the American Legion, and 40&8, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. While he will be sorely missed, family and friends take comfort knowing that heaven just got a bit brighter and entertaining with no shortage of jokes and one-liners. Surviving along with his wife are two sons, Joe (Shannon) Sliger JR and Brian ( Jamie) Sliger both of Lafayette, a daughter, Stephanie (Chike) Okeafor of Paradise Valley, AZ, three sisters, Patricia (Gene) Carmony of Lafayette, Sandra Sliger of Boston, MA and Catherine (Paul) Turek of Puyallup, WA. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Megan (Dr. Ryan) Helms, Joe, Bailey, Alex, Morgan and Lauren Sliger, Anaya, Kezie and Justus Joe Okeafor, and a great grandson Hudson Helms. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm Monday, March 2, 2015 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 3rd at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd Lafayette, IN 47909 with Fr. Eric Underwood officiating. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens with military rights. In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute in Joe's name to either the American Heart Association or the Wounded Warrior Project.
