Janet Marie (Rycraft) Batta, 73, of Lafayette, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2023, at her home with her loved ones by her side.
She was born June 24, 1950, in Lafayette, to the late Max E. and Betty Ann (Carroll) Rycraft. She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and continued her education at Purdue University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree. Janet then attended Miami University of Ohio in Oxford, OH where she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy. On August 24, 1974, she married Lawrence “Larry” Batta at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lafayette.
Janet was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and worked for Tippecanoe School Corporation as a Speech and Hearing Therapist. Most of her career was spent at Mintonye Elementary and Southwestern Middle Schools, among numerous other schools in the county. She was also a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority at Purdue, was an active Bridge player, avid Purdue sports fan, and spent many days with family and friends at their Lake Freeman cottage. After spending her first date with Larry at the Indianapolis 500 time trials, she became a fan of the Indianapolis 500.
Along with her husband Larry, Janet is survived by her 2 sons, Nick (Nikki) Batta of Greenwood and Pat (Danielle) Batta of Fairbury, IL; as well as 4 grandchildren, Addison Batta, Aiden Batta, Boston Batta, and Kingston Batta. Although an only child, Janet had a particularly close relationship with her many cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Betty Ann Rycraft.
Memorial contributions in Janet’s name may be given to the American Cancer Association.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Thursday, November 2, 2023, with Rosary service at 4:45 pm, at Soller-Baker, Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909.
Mass will be at 11:00 am, Friday, November 3, 2023, at St. Mary Cathedral, 1207 Columbia Street, Lafayette, IN 47901. Interment will be at 2:30 pm, at Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Indiana.
