James L. Short, 75, of Lafayette, died at 2:18 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Central.
He was born July 15, 1935, in Fountain County, to the late Lawrence Short and Pauline Bannon Short-Rice.
He graduated from Williamsport High School in 1954. He served in the National Guard.
On June 10, 1955, he married Barbara Johnson in Pine Village. She survives.
James was a mechanic at International Harvester for 22 and a half years, the Monon Railroad for 2 years, 9 months and Purdue University athletic department for 15 years.
He was a charter member of Brady Lane Church of Christ, American Legion Post 11, Illiana Antique Power Association, Tippecanoe Steam and Gas Power, and the John Purdue Club. He was an assistant Scout Master for troop 380 for 18 years and enjoyed antique tractors.
Surviving are 2 sons, Kenneth Short (wife: Kim) and Keith Short (wife: Jill) both of West Lafayette; 2 sisters, Marilyn Newton of Lafayette and Shirley Rice (husband: Byron) of Hillsboro.
Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, Staff Sergeant Jason P., Radley, Courtney, Ashlyn, and Alanna Short; and 3 great grandchildren, Haley, Matthew and Rachel Short.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2011, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel with a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, Ind., 47909. Larry McMillan officiating. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
