James Ira Hayden, 78, of Lafayette, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at his residence.
He was born November 4, 1945, in Lafayette, to the late James A. and Ruth (Lomen) Hayden.
James graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School and farrier Schooling.
He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergent from the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
On December 30, 1967, he married Janet Mills in Lafayette and she survives.
James worked for Eli Lilly and Company from 1973 until 2001 when he retired and was a farrier for 36 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, shoeing horses and riding horses in his younger years.
Surviving with his wife, Janet S. Hayden of Lafayette, is a daughter, Julie (husband Scott) Blacker of Lafayette, a granddaughter, Mia Irene Blacker of Lafayette, Siblings, Henry (wife Brenda) Hayden of Lafayette, David (wife Angie) Hayden of Marlette, MI, Susan (husband Daniel) Rhymer of Delphi and Terry Hayden of West Lafayette.
James was preceded in death by a son, James I. Hayden, Jr., brothers, Curtis Tommy Hayden and William Hayden, sisters, Nancy Lower and Sharon Dietrich.
Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, January 12, 2024 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024 also at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, with Chaplain David McKinney officiating. Entombment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette with American Legion Post # 492 military rights.
