James I. Smith, 86, of Clarks Hill, passed away at 11:54 am on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at his residence.
He was born August 5, 1932 in Clinton County to the late Minor and Alta (Bowen) Smith.
James graduated from Clarks Hill High School in 1950 and proudly served in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956.
After the Army James farmed until his retirement and had also worked at Tippecanoe School Corp. at Clarks Hill, Wainwright and Cole Schools and Sears.
James married Shirley A. Gano on July 11, 1954 in Clarks Hill and she survives.
He was a member of Clarks Hill Christian Church and enjoyed farming and following high school and Indiana University Basketball.
Surviving along with his wife are their children, Mike A. (Kathy Wortley) Smith of Clarks Hill, Neal (Sandi) Smith of Carmel and Denise Stall of Clarks Hill; three sisters, Marjorie Hodgen of Macon, MO, Nancy (Don) Perkins and Shirley (Wayne) Doke both of Clarks Hill. Also surviving several grandchildren and great grandchildren. James was preceded in death by a son, Randy “Banjo” Smith.
Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until the time of the service at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Clarks Hill Christian Church with Pastor Jeff Stedge officiating. Burial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Clarks Hill Cemetery with Military rights.
Those wishing may contribute in James’ name to the American Cancer Society or to the Clarks Hill Christian Church.
