James D. Goonen, 78, of Lafayette, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at IU Health Arnett Hospital.

He was born May 2, 1948, in Lafayette, to the late James R. and Fern I. (Hines) Goonen.

James graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School with the class of 1966.

He was a veteran of the Air Corp serving from 1966 until 1970.

On February 13, 1971, he married Judith A. Glaser in Lafayette and she survives.

James worked as a supervisor for Fairfield Manufacturing for 36 years before retiring on May 29, 2008.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge, VFW and American Legion Post #11.

James enjoyed traveling and doing puzzles.

Surviving with his wife, Judith A. Goonen of Lafayette, is a son, Jeffery T. Goonen (Timothy May) of Windermere, FL, a granddaughter, Chelsea Paige (William) Ruckel and a great grandson, Leland Ruckel.

James was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Goonen Radtke, grandson Bradley Michael Radtke and two sisters, Gloria Hanson and Sheila Kay Bothwell.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of the service at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909.  His burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette, IN with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made in James’ name to the American Cancer Society.
