James B. Atkinson

James Burns Atkinson, 65, of Lafayette, died at 2:21 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at St. Elizabeth East.
He was born Aug. 3, 1945, in Lafayette, and was the son of Arnold and Evelyn Burns Atkinson of Port Charlotte, Fla. He graduated from Remington High School in 1964.
His first marriage was to Joyce Epler in August 1965. They divorced. On Feb. 28, 1982, he married Bonnie Hand in Lafayette, and she survives.
Mr. Atkinson was a farmer for many years before becoming a truck driver.
He was in military service from October 1965 to September 1967. He enjoyed riding motorcycles, fishing, boating and photography.
Surviving with his wife and parents are two daughters Cynthia Clark (husband: Benjamin) of Monticello and Lori Atkinson of Seattle, Wash.; three stepsons, Jace Sorenson, Derrin Sorenson (wife: Nancy) both of West Lafayette, and Chris Sorenson (wife: Joy) of Lafayette; a sister, Joy Price, and brother, Dennis Atkinson (wife: Wendy), both of Port Charlotte.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Morgan and Carter Clark, Lacie Reed, Ryan Atkinson, Ashley Soltis, Craig, Alyssa, Kayla and Kelsey Sorenson.
Visitation will be 1 hour prior to a 2 p.m. memorial service Friday, May 27, 2011, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd, Lafayette, IN 47909 with Pastor Trey Garner officiating. Those wishing may contribute to the American Heart Association or Almost Home Humane Society.

I am so sorry for your family&s loss. I keep you in my prayers and thoughts every day. I am sorry I could not be there today because of other conflicts, but I wanted you to know that I will always love and care about all of you. I am glad that your Father and Grandpa is now out of pain and in a better place looking over all of us. I am sure he is very proud that he got to see Ashley get married and his family grow and prosper over the years. It was a shock to receive the email today that Jim had passed away. Sandy and I are in Italy and regret we will not be back in time for the service. You have lost a love one and all the rest of us that new Jim lost a great friend. My memories of him will never be forgotten, and as my father said our time on this earth is only a blink in eternity, try to leave it better than we found it, and don?t worry we will all be able to sing together again in heaven. I was so sorry to read of Jim&s passing. I wish I could express these condolences in person but I have to be with my son, Jamie, daughter-in-law, and two grand daughters for an appointment on Friday, made some time ago.

Please know that you all will be in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow. May you all feel peace and love in your memories of Jim. I have some memories of him being ""a little brother"" when I used to spend the night with you, Joy...and those summers at the Lake too.

I hope you all are doing well. (I envy your warm weather especially this year!)
