James (Jim) Arthur Chastain, husband, father, uncle, brother and friend, died peacefully after a battle with Parkinson’s, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus, IN on April 25th, 2023. Jim was born in Lafayette, IN on December 13, 1943 to the late Amiel Gear Chastain and Mary Helen (King) Chastain.
Growing up in West Lafayette, IN He attended Morton Elementary School, West Side Junior High and West Side High School, graduating in 1961. He had a love for music, playing the cornet, baritone and tuba in high school and college. He attended Purdue University (1961-1966), graduating with a BA in Mathematics. One of Jim’s fondest memories was being a part of the Purdue All American Marching Band, especially performing an eight-week summer residency at Radio City Music Hall with the Rockettes in 1963. Jim enjoyed being a musician in a local band, The Moonliners. Jim also attended Ball State University (1966-1969), graduating with a Master of Arts.
Jim has been a lifelong educator. He began his teaching career at Test Junior High school in Richmond, IN and Greenfield Central High School in Greenfield, IN, before returning to West Lafayette, IN to teach math at Harrison High School where he taught for the next 34 years, retiring in 2006. He left his mark on many students by teaching advanced math and was especially proud of the students that “tested out” of college calculus. Jim was the “Voice of the Raiders”, announcing varsity basketball and football for 27 years. He is recognized in the Raider Athletic Hall of Fame for this accomplishment. Jim also taught as an adjunct professor at both Purdue and Ivy Tech. Due to his teaching style he often had students from other sections attend his lectures.
Jim was also known for his quick-witted sense of humor. In his younger years, he enjoyed listening to music, watching NASA launches, attending The Indy 500, playing cards, fishing with his boys, traveling, golf and watching sports or movies.
Jim is survived by his companion, Barbara Widing. Jim has five adult children, all of whom he was very proud of from two separate marriages. Julia (husband Timothy) Marstall of Weldon Spring, MO and Neil Chastain of Cleveland, OH with his former spouse, Fran (Harter) Fitzhenry and Joe (wife Holly) Chastain of Columbus, IN, Dr. Ben (wife Autumn) Chastain of Columbus, IN and John (wife Kendra) Chastain of Whitestown, IN with former spouse, Glenda (Young) Chastain.
Jim loved his two surviving sisters, Barbara Kent of Cincinnati, OH and Beverly Sheets of Indianapolis, IN. Jim is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 nieces and 2 nephews.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway W. West Lafayette, IN 47906. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, May 1, 2023 also at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel. Burial will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette, IN.
