Condolences to the family I tested out of two semesters of calculus at Purdue thanks to his high standards and expectations. Math was one of my most challenging classes growing up, but a subject I grew to love. I'm a Signals Analyst now and can actually say I use Calculus in my job. Thank you Mr. Chastain for the foundation that allowed me to build a future.

I'm so sad to hear about his passing. I was one of his students from the class of 1987- I went on to college and medical school afterwards and to this day, feel that he was the best teacher that I ever had. Thank you, Mr. Chastain.
Aaron Kauffman left a message on May 1, 2023:
To his loved ones, I am so sorry for you loss. I had the distinct privilege of being one of his students for my final two years at Harrison (Class of '91). We learned so much and laughed so often, even making a quote book of his witty comments. What a loss. What a legend. Do your craft well, and infuse yourself into it like no other can--that was his example. "Jimmy Chaz" was one of the biggest highlights of my high school experience. We had "the largest math club in the universe. " "Swimming isn't a sport; it's something you do when you fall out of a boat." When I touch base with my old high school friends, Mr. Chastain always comes up. He had such an influence on us.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Jim and I were classmates and bandmates in high school. When the marching band performed, I can remember that both of our mothers were generally on hand to do a quick uniform repair if needed. Jim and I also played in the dance band together, a band that was pretty good, playing mostly tunes that originated back in the Swing Era. Often at Jim’s house we would listen to records by Doc Severinsen or the amazing Al Hirt, two preeminent trumpet players of the day. I also have intriguing memories of Jim’s dad, who would rant to me about FDR, whom he apparently detested. I kind of found that amusing. Our family had come to the U.S. from Norway only a few years after the end of WWII, and my parents, especially my mother, idolized FDR. I didn’t let Mr. Chastain know that! For some 15 years, Jim, Bill Butz, and I would get together each year for a football game at Ross-Ade stadium, Bill traveling from Maryland, and me driving down from either Kalamazoo or Madison. Those annual get-togethers were truly enjoyable. In moving back to West Lafayette some 8 years ago, I’d like to think I took inspiration from Jim, as I embarked on tutoring in STEM subjects, including calculus, in area high schools. Jim left us too soon, but I think he had a good run.

Our sympathies go out to your family. Scott and I have fond memories of Harrison HS and Calculus with “Jimmy Chaz” as we so affectionately referred. I learned so much in his Calculus class that I did not have to even study for my Calculus course in college. I am so appreciative of his teaching and difficulty of the course. It prepared us for college and beyond. Thank you Mr. Chastain. My you rest with the Lord in peace. ✝️✝️✝️

My condolences to all of his friends and family. Mr. Chastain taught me multiple math classes and was an amazing teacher. I am now an engineering professor who teaches mathematically heavy subjects and he had incredible influence on my life and career. I am sure I am just one of many hundreds or thousands of students who benefited so much from his teaching. He will be missed but his legacy will go on for generations.

Barbara and Beverly, I am saddened to learn that your little brother Jim has passed on from this life to the next. Many years ago when you lived at the corner of Wiggins St and N. Chauncey in WL Jim and I were neighbors (we lived at 209 Wiggins), classmates and best friends. We spent hours playing ball in the streets and climbing the cherry tree in your back yard to eat the cherries that the birds didn't! It was a great time to grow up in WL and be educated in the Red Devil system. Lots and lots of fond memories. My condolences to both of you and the Chastain family. Jim will be missed by many.

We are sending the Chastain Family our love and support as they honor the memory of Mr. Chastain. His daughter, Julie and I, have been best friends since our early days at Sunnyside and to this day, he will always be Mr. Chastain to me. I can still hear his voice while he smoked his pipe. He would call to Julie and say, "what is she saying, I can't understand her, she is talking so fast". I have grown up with Julie and her family and been there for so many milestones in their lives. After my husband, John Ambrose, and I moved back to West Lafayette, we invited Julie, Tim, and her dad over to our house, along with with my dad to watch football. It is a memory I cherish. They were sitting there with contented smirks on their faces, and it was obvious they were both proud of their daughters. He was truly loved and he loved his family. Mr. Chastain will be dearly missed. With deepest sympathy, Joy McEwen and John Ambrose
