He was born, December 20, 1929, in Lafayette to the late Orville and Mildred (Peterson) Harless. On July 15, 1950 Fred married the love of his life, Barbara Haley, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette. They have 7 daughters. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.
“Big Fred” was a brilliant man with a boisterous personality. Known for embellished stories, his big heart, and his big laugh. He loved Barbara, his daughters, and his big loud family. He taught us all how to live and laugh. He was an avid Cubs and Boilers Fan. He graduated from Klondike High School where he excelled in basketball and was named “All Sectional and All County” in 1948. He was recruited by John Wooden to play at Ventura Junior College in California. He attended Indiana Business School and later National Home Management training. He had a 40 year career with National Homes Corporation where he held several senior executive positions. He worked in Lafayette, Horsehead, NY, Tyler, TX, and Lago Vista, TX before retiring in 1990. He served in many public service positions in Texas and Indiana. He was also recognized by Governor Branigin as a Sagamore of the Wabash award recipient. He earned his 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; 7 daughters, Karen (Brian) Devine, Kathy (David) Heath, Kim (Tom) Campbell, Kelly (Scott) Fohr, Koreen (Karl) Kyhnell, Kay (Everette) Stephens all of Lafayette and Kris (Tom) Ferriter of Knoxville, TN; 19 Grandchildren; and 18 Great Grand Children. Along with his parents, Fred was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 3 sisters.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 8 with Rosary beginning at 3:30 pm at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd, Lafayette. Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 am, Friday, December 9 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 612 Wabash Avenue, Lafayette, IN 47905. Memorial donations in Fred’s name may be given to Matthew 25 Share and Care (Soup Kitchen) at St. Ann Catholic Church, 612 Wabash Avenue, Lafayette, IN 47905 or to the Central Catholic Tuition Assistance Fund c/o Lafayette Catholic Schools, 2410 South 9th Street, Lafayette, IN 47909.
