Irene S. Petrie, 81, passed away in her home in West Lafayette, Indiana on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, after a fearless battle with cancer.

Mrs. Petrie was born on January 11th, 1941, in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada to the late Pierre and Francoise Vacon. She married Dr. Raymond Petrie of New Waterford, Nova Scotia on July 8th, 1967 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A graduate of the Teacher’s College of Nova Scotia, she taught elementary school in a one room schoolhouse. She then worked in her husband, Dr. Petrie’s medical offices in Remington, Indiana and Fowler, Indiana until the time of his death in 2010.

Mrs. Petrie was a loyal friend and an avid pickleball player. She was a caring, kind, and generous person and she knew no stranger. She was also a proud gardener and she held her friendships dearly. She was known for her unwavering love of her family and the joy of her life, her nine grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Moira Rae Walbaum of West Lafayette, Indiana and her son Steven Petrie and daughter in law Candace Petrie of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Sisters Betty Ann Frotten and Alma Vacon, brothers Milton (Wanda) and Thomas Vacon of Nova Scotia, Canada.  She is also survived by her grandchildren Owen and Ellen Walbaum of West Lafayette, Indiana, Ryan, Benjamin, and Mara Jade Petrie of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Josiah, Ethan, Mackenzie, and Aria Fritzel of Fort Wayne.

She was preceded in death by her parents Pierre and Francoise Vacon of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and her beloved husband, Dr. Raymond Petrie of Remington, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Elara Caring Hospice, 3768 Rome Drive, Lafayette, Indiana 47905 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 pm, Tuesday, August 30th, 2022, at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd. Lafayette, IN 47909,

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, August 31st, 2022, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 535 West State Street, West Lafayette, IN 47906 with Father Tom McDermott officiating.

Inurnment will follow at Grandview Cemetery in West Lafayette.

Irene and Ray were our wonderful neighbors in New Waterford and were very kind to us growing up. Irene and my mother remained friends after they moved to Reminton and we visited this great part of the world when we could.
