Horace “Skip” D. Jackson, 99 of West Lafayette, passed away on Friday, September 16, 2022, at his residence. He was born April 14, 1923, in Dauphin County, PA, to the late Horace and Ruth (Barnhart) Jackson. Skip graduated from Pen State university in 1948, and earned his Masters degree in 1950 and PhD in 1953 from Purdue University. He was a veteran servant in the Army in WWll. Horace married Mary Ann Cree on September 20,1947 in Woolrich, PA and she preceded him in death in 1998. He married Betty Ruth on October 20, 2007, in Lafayette and she survives. Skip was a professor of Biochemistry and Veterinary Physiology at Purdue University for 43 years and retired on January 1, 1992. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and previously Lafayette Friends Meeting and Federated Church.
Skip enjoyed hiking, canoeing, backpacking, birdwatching, jogging, bike riding, square dancing, walking, push-ups (including 100 on his 95th Birthday) and napping. He was a founding member and very active participant at Purdue’s A.H. Ismail Center for Health, Exercise and Nutrition for over 50 years, where he met his wife, Betty. Dr Jackson started a jogging tradition with his students in 1973 which continues and is now named in his honor as the “The Dr Skip Jackson Dog Jog.” This event is held in conjunction with the annual Purdue Veterinary School Conference.
Surviving along with his wife Betty are his children Karl D. Jackson of Bend, OR, Mark C. (Lisa) Jackson of Aurora, CO, Cynthia L. (Mark) Fields of West Lafayette, and step-children A Daniel (Elfriede) Ruth of LaPorte, Debra (Brian) Brewer of West Lafayette, Donna Stapleton of Chesterfield, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Horace was preceded in death by his sisters Mary Louise Laskowski and Ruth E. Mosser of Harrisburg, PA, an infant son, David Jackson, and step-daughter Diane Kehlhoffer of Lafayette.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church 509 North Street, Lafayette; Rev Tracey Leslie officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
