Herschel William “Bill” Byers, 92, of Lafayette, passed away Tuesday June 27, 2023.
Bill was born in Lafayette, IN on July 27, 1930, to the late Herschel Wallace and Mary Elizabeth (Tull) Byers. He grew up with three sisters, two of which preceded him in death.
Mary McCloud (Al) and Alice Byers. He is survived by his sister, Violet Becker (Roy).
He married the love of life, Joyce C. Dowell, on February 17, 1952. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage before her death on February 24, 2007.
Probably his greatest joy in life were his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Mike Byers (Patricia), Diana Byers, Randy Byers (Teryl) and Nancy Byers Keller (Phil).
His grandchildren, Michael Byers, Adam Byers (Kate), Kelsie Byers Grothen (David), Tate Byers (Karley), Kurt Byers (Lindsey), Hayden Keller (Anna), and Grant Keller.
He is preceded in death by grandson Jonathan A. Byers 1983-1998.
His Great grandchildren, Hailey, Audrey, and Carter Byers, Lou, Sutton, and Hollis Byers.
After serving in Korea with the United States Army, he attended Purdue University where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering.
Bill worked at Purdue University for 30 years, retiring in 1995 as Superintendent of Construction. He loved his job and the people he worked with, the final project of his career and possibly his favorite was the now iconic Bell Tower. He was a true Boilermaker!
Our family would like to give our sincere thanks to the staff and caregivers at Creasy Springs. We are forever grateful for the love and kindness they showed him throughout his stay there. Especially, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Jill, Melissa and Cidnei.
Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Stidham United Methodist Church, 5300 South 175 West, Lafayette, IN 47909. Pastor Darin Hendrey officiating.
Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens, 1718 W. 350 North, West Lafayette, IN 47906.
