Harold L. Alting, age 94, passed away peacefully on April 2nd, 2026, at Creasy Springs Legacy. Harold was born in Lafayette, Indiana on September 24, 1931, to Frank and Nancy (Watkins) Alting and attended Lafayette Jefferson High School.
In 1951, Harold proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was an MP and guarded prisoners at Geoje Island, South Korea, which was the largest United Nations Command POW camp holding approximately 170,000 North Korean and Chinese prisoners.
On July 8, 1956, he married the love of his life, Betty Joanne Perkins in Romney, Indiana, and they shared 70 years together. The home where they lived and raised their 3 children was built by them along with the help of family and friends.
Harold was a natural athlete and played basketball at national homes, and with other local teams as well. While in a summer outdoor tournament in Logansport, he played against Hall of Famer, Oscar Robertson. Along with basketball he was an avid golfer. While in school, he caddied at the Lafayette Country Club for eight years and loved telling stories about his experiences there. He played at Lafayette Jefferson High School as a senior and then with the Fraternal Order of Eagles League here in Lafayette for over 10 years, with a scratch handicap for one year.
Harold worked 24 years at Warren Paper as a print shop foreman and then retired after working 15 years at the YWCA.
Some of his hobbies included working on the chain gang at McCutcheon high school football games for 15 years along with attending all children and grandchildren’s athletic events. He loved fishing with family for catfish on the Tippecanoe River as well as at their cottage in Monticello for over 30 years.
Harold had many hobbies through the years. He grew just about everything that you could grow in a garden. At one time he even planted cotton from seeds he collected on a vacation. He bottled wine from many of the fruit trees he planted and created his label from a picture of the family. Harold was also very artistic. He could draw and he also made many different wood carvings of ducks and birds that he loved. He was an outdoorsman and loved nature. He could build just about anything you could want or need.
Besides his hobbies, Harold and Betty enjoyed traveling by car across the United States of America and have visited 46 of the 50 states. Harold recently told family that he had lived a great life.
Harold is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters Kelli Jo (Stan) Thayer, Tammy Kay (Jeff) McCall; and son, Scott Curtis Alting. Also surviving are three granddaughters. Brittany (Justin) Hise, Kayla (Trent) Kucera, and Kelsey (Zeke) McCall; two great grandchildren, Cooper and Leighton Hise, with another great granddaughter to arrive soon.
Nieces and nephews, past and present, include; Caroline White Morris, Carla White Griego, Sandy (John) Marvin, Cheri Alting, Frank Edward Alting III, Mike (Bonnie) Alting, Ron Alting, Gail Rishel Davis, Linda (Rick) Coons, Allen (Julie) Rishel, Karen (JR) Blosser, and many great nieces and nephews.
Harold was proceeded in death by his parents and siblings; Nuel (Mary) White, Frank “Bo” (Estelle) Alting Jr., John (Ruth) Alting, Jaletta (Coy) Goodman, Betty (Floyd) Rishel, and infant brother, Charles.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 9, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Soller-Baker Funeral Home, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909.
A ceremony to celebrate Harold will be Friday, April 10, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Soller-Baker Funeral Home. He will be placed at Elmwood Cemetery in Romney, IN located on State Road 28.

They would also like to acknowledge and thank the nurses, aides and staff at Creasy Springs Legacy for their compassion, care and love that they gave Harold. He often told the family how good they were to him.
