Edwin Howard Page Sr., 91, died at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette on Saturday, May 21, 2011.
He was born in Glasgow, Ky., Feb. 3, 1920, to Leo Page and Ora McFarland Page. He graduated from Glasgow High School in 1936 and from Western Kentucky University in 1940 with a bachelor?s degree in Biology and a music degree.
In August 1941, he married Margaret Mitchell in Greensburg, Ky. They were married for 62 years before her death in November 2003.
Mr. Page served in the Navy, completed officers training and was in the Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Louisville during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart.
After the war, he returned to Louisville, where he taught biology and music to high school students for two years. He later joined his brother-in-law in a dairy operation in Greensburg, Ky., and developed his interest in veterinary medicine.
He attended The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine graduating in 1953, and returned to Kentucky to establish a practice of small and large animal medicine until 1964 when he joined the teaching staff in the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine. He retired in 1985 as Department Head of Large Animal Clinics.
During his tenure at Purdue, he received teaching awards including the student selected “Outstanding Clinician” award, the Purdue Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award, the Amoco Outstanding Teacher Award, and he is listed in the Purdue Book of Great Teachers. His interest was in Equine (horse) medicine and lameness, and was a pioneer in the use of acupuncture in veterinary medicine. He was a past president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
He is survived by a son, Edwin Page Jr. (wife: Beth) of Pittsburgh and a daughter, Julie Schleck (husband: Kurt) of West Lafayette and a brother Leon Page (wife Lassie) of Franklin, KY
Also surviving are two grandsons, Patrick Schleck of Union City, NJ and Brent Schleck of Ann Arbor, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Ora Page, and a brother, Benjamin G. Page.
Visitation 5-7:30 p.m. Monday at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West. Funeral 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Federated Church. Interment will be at Glasgow Cemetery, Glasgow, KY.
