Dear Debbie and the Robert Hagen Family, I was so shocked to hear of Bob’s passing that I could not believe it til I finally read it in the J & C! Then my heart just broke in two, just like it did when I lost my husband, Jeff Washburn, 4 years ago. I called my son, Jade Ryan, who also knew Bob, and he was devastated as well, to hear of Bob’s passing! Our family knew Bob in different ways and in different times, but we all loved him and cherished him as a friend, a doctor, a mentor, a guidance counselor, and an honest, true, caring, unique, one-of-a-kind human being who we will always CHERISH!! My husband valued his opinion in sports and sports medicine and so went to him for information when an athlete was injured and Jeff, a sportswriter, was doing a story on the injured player! Jade, following in his Dad’s footsteps, was a sportswriter at the school and he, too, went to Bob for information about an injured player or perhaps medical info for a documentary he was working on for the school newspaper about ACL tears. Bob was my Dr. and did three surgeries on me for which I was extremely grateful, as he also monitored the fragility of my ever changing spine!! Our family will GREATLY MISS HIM for so many reasons!!! We have had all of you in our thoughts and in our prayers all these difficult days for you, Debbie, and your family. We most certainly will continue to do so!! God bless each and every one of you, and God bless an most magnificent and special man in Bob Hagen!!!! Love, Cheryl & Jade Washburn

Bob and Debby have been great friends of our since their days back in Columbia in the eighties. We went to hockey games, football games and even indoor soccer games. I played basketball every Sunday with Bob and we loved it. We both worked at the MU Medical center as well. Bob excelled (and beyond) at everything he did but instead of becoming arrogant it gave him a calm confidence that he always passed on to those around him, especially patients. Unfortunately his Detroit Tigers went south on him for these last few years. He provided friendship and comfort to all those around him. There aren't many like him.

Dr. Bob Hagen was an exceptional orthopedic surgeon as well as an exemplary public servant and leader. I was referred to him by friends over a decade ago from our church when I needed some knee surgery and I knew when I met him he was the clear choice to do the procedure after his full diagnosis. He also gave fine advice to my wife to actually avoid surgery. His acts of both kindness and willingness to serve those underprivileged to keep their joints healthy and allow them to compete in high school sports in this area do not need further elaboration. Such humble physicians are not always in abundance and he has set a great example for his compatriots and the community at large. We would encourage everyone to give to the United Way where he was such a leader in his name.

Dr. Hagen was a great friend, surgeon and mentor for both me and my youngest son, Cody. He preformed numerous surgery’s for me and mentored Cody for several years. He gave freely of his time and particularly helped Cody before, during and after Med school. Cody is now an Orthopedic Surgeon of which he owes a great deal to Dr. Bob Hagen. Dr. Hagen’s guiding spirit and guidance for everyone he touched will be missed. May you Rest In Peace!

Dear Hagan Family I am deeply sorry for your loss. Back in 1994 my then 14 year old son was hit by a car and broke his right femur. He was taken to the hospital where Dr Hagen was working that night. He talked to us for several minutes. Then he said, "now I have a job to do and you don't want to be in here." My son retired last year from the US Navy with 21 years. Several years went by and my arthritis was truly bad. I went to Dr. Hagen for shots. He said that we looked familiar...then he told us that he remembered repairing our sons leg as he was putting the shots in my knees. God needed another flower for His bouquet1 Dr. Hagen will be missed!

Dear Hagen Family, I did not know Dr. Hagen well, but in what I know, he had a servant heart. He attended to our daughter’s broken arm many years ago. Both he and Debbie gave SO much back to the community, both in the form of time and money. His life lived is such a good example to emulate in being successful both professionally and personally. My sincere condolences to his wife, children and grandchildren. May you experience the love and mercy of Christ in the days ahead. Kindly, Steve Haby

Deepest sympathies to Debbie, Jessica and Alex and their families. We were so saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Dean was privileged to work at Unity with Bob and always appreciated his guidance and expertise when he had questions about orthopedic injuries. Bob always took time to ask Chris about our sons when they ran into each other at Franciscan Health Lafayette East. Our son, Ian, was privileged to have Bob as a soccer coach who was encouraging, enthusiastic and kind to the kids he was coaching. Bob was the ultimate role model for young men. Bob was loved, admired, respected by all and will be sadly missed.-Dean and Chris Kelly

Dr. Hagen was my clinical preceptor during my second year of medical school. He was set to retire in the latter part of that year, but he was gracious enough to let me rotate with him. My biggest takeaway from my experiences with him was how much compassion he showed to each of his patients and got to know each one’s story and concerns. He was an excellent teacher both in how to be a good technical surgeon and how to care for patients as a whole. My deepest condolences to Dr. Hagen’s family.

You will be so dearly missed, Dr. Hagan. It was a joy to have your children in my classes at Jeff High School where each one excelled. You also gave kind and loving care to my mother-in-law when she had her knee replaced. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations as you walked the sidelines at football games. Your kind sense of humor was contagious. For these reasons and so many more, I will dearly miss you.

My heartfelt condolences to the Dr. Hagen's family. Dr. Hagen had an incredible memory. I was a physical therapy student shadowing Dr. Hagen in surgery. After I introduced myself, I told him he had reconstructed my husband's ACL 5 years earlier. He ask for his name. He paused and then said he played offensive guard for McCutcheon. I was amazed that he could remember his school, sport, and even position after 5 years. In 2014 my mother was watching her great nephew play basketball at a West Lafayette vs. Jeff game. At the end of the game my Mom was walking down the bleachers and her knee gave out. She fell and hit her head on the gym floor. Dr. Hagen was there taking care of her. Once he found out that she had a heart transplant and was on blood thinners he wanted her to go to the ER immediately. My Mom did not want to go by ambulance but agreed for my Dad to take her directly there. Unfortunately, she suffered a subdermal hematoma and a skull fracture. She lost consciousness while having a CAT scan. She underwent emergency surgery and was on a ventilator. The days passed as we waited for the brain swelling to decrease and for her to regain consciousness. Mom never recovered and passed away after 13 days. Even though Dr. Hagen was not part of her care, he stopped by every single day for 13 days to see how she was doing. Our family greatly appreciated his care and concern. Professionally, Dr. Hagen took time to personally take phone calls regarding his patients. He would send personal notes to express his appreciation for the care the we gave his patients. He will be greatly missed. I want his family to know what a caring and compassionate physician he was. You will be in my prayers.

Dr. Hagen repaired our daughter's torn ACL and when she shared her interest in a medical career, he offered to let her shadow him. She is now in college studying nursing and will remember him as a role model. We will always be thankful for the excellent care he took of our daughter. We think of his family and friends and the great loss his death leaves for the community. A life well lived that positively affected so many.

My sincerest condolences to all of the Hagen family. I worked with Dr Hagen when he first came to town and began doing surgery at Home Hospital, with his office (LOC) on the corner. Over many years I observed his integrity and work ethic in action, in the OR and at the bedside. I continued to work alongside him as he served on various hospital administrative committees. He also kept my daughter out of the hospital and on the soccer field from 2nd grade thru college. He will be forever missed. RIP Dr Hagen. Things won't be the same here without you.

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Hagen's family. He scoped my knee my junior year in High School (1996) and had me wrestling within two weeks of surgery. I will never forget his kindness and his reassuring approach to his work. I had dedicated much of my life to wrestling (16 years in total) and thought all of my hard work had been derailed by the injury. I didn't find the success I had hoped for as a junior, but went on to place 5th in the state my senior year and played football and wrestled for four years in college and never had another knee issue. Dr. Hagen checked in on me periodically and that meant the world to me. Dr. Hagen's kindness extended beyond a doctor - patient relationship. I attended Wabash College for undergrad and was trying to decide between a business career path and medicine. He let me shadow him for a day of office visits and during a shoulder replacement surgery. I ultimately found my way to a career in investment banking that I love. I owe that, in part, to Dr. Hagen and the generosity he extended me when I was in college in the late 90's. I was blessed to have crossed paths with him and just wanted to share that with those that are close to him. He had a profound impact on my life as I am sure he did with so many others.

My two favorite are soccer evenings together with your family and spending a weekend at Lake Cumberland. I had never been water skiing before and each of you welcomed me as if I were family making me feel comfortable as I learned. The kindness of your family is a light in this world and it has a ripple effect out into the same community that care for each of you dearly. I remember speaking with him recently and he was so proud of you Alex and Jess for the wonderful parents you have grown to be. He was one proud Grandpa. I am always here if you want to talk. -Josh
