Mary Irene Stephens, Ph.D. 4/18/31 – 5/8/23. Irene passed away peacefully after a very full 92 years of dedication to her family and friends, spreading the spark of humor and performance to all that she did. Irene was the youngest of five children of Jack and Edith Cattran in Akron, Ohio. She was the loving spouse of Mark W. Stephens (1953, div. 1973), Benton H. Faulkner (deceased), and Donald Martin (deceased). She was the proud mother of John Bryant Stephens, Ph.D. (Conflict Resolution) of Durham, NC, and William Olen Stephens, Ph.D, (Philosophy) of Scottsdale, AZ.
A specialist in childhood language acquisition and disorders, she was an award-winning teacher who trained speech pathologists and conducted research at Purdue University (1972-1977) and Northern Illinois University (1977-1999). Sock puppets were a teaching tool she used to engage children in language tests. Never shy of the spotlight, “Brave Irene” shared her love of drama from the stage at DePauw University (class of 1953) to the “TGIF” gatherings of her close women friends, to charades, parties, and more.
Her cheerful, buoyant spirit issued from a seemingly bottomless well. Irene was a trusted mentor to her students and a cheerleader for her many dear friends. Her generosity was legendary. Memorial donations can be made to WBAA radio or DePauw University. A gathering to celebrate Irene’s life will be scheduled for later this summer. Condolences can be sent to Bill (williamostephens@gmail.com) or John (stephens07@hotmail.com).
