William L Hoover left a message on March 14, 2026:
John was an important part of my life in many regards. The academic connection should come first, but having him as a friend was the most important and memorable. The highlight was our trip to Mackinac Island for a meeting. Spending time traveling in a van is a sure way to bond, if additional bonding is needed. My mother accompanied us, a real treat for her. John and I had common roots "back East" and at Penn State. We were there a different periods, but at least in the 60's the Penn State Forestry School was known to establish brotherhoods. I guess it was the mystic of the State College campus and long history of graduates success. John always smiled when Penn State was discussed. I loved John's laugh. It wasn't robust. The smile that went with his laughing was more important than how loud it was. There is no question that his contributions to forest biometrics will be drawn on for generations of researchers and implementors' of techniques he developed. He was one of the earliest researchers to adapt to the use of computers, and help others use them. Joyce's adjustment to the later years of John's life sets an example of what the marriage vows really mean. John's spirit will live on in those lucky enough to have had him as a friend, but especially in his family. Farewell John.

David Titzer left a message on March 12, 2026:
It was with sadness that I learned of John's passing. Reflecting on his "genius mentoring" during my undergraduate and graduate years at Purdue, for 5+years I got to experience John's guidance for my academic planning, professional development and personal growth, all of which no doubt taxed his patience! I relished his challenges and enjoyed our discussions. He always listened. Later, in my professional career, I tried to remember how he had guided me as I mentored younger colleagues. John positively impacted so many of us. Take Care, Dave Titzer B.S.F 76 and M.S.F 77

John was my major professor at Purdue from 1982 to 1984. A great mentor and friend, the world was certainly a better place for having him in it. He helped make my life immeasurably better. With deep sympathy to Joyce and his family. Jeff Welty Tacoma, Washington
