Dorothy Kay Collins Dexter Kimbrell Mansfield was born April 22 1940 to Charles E. Collins and Katheryn
Maude Gwin Collins in Danville IL.
Kay Attended Jefferson High School in Lafayette where, as a member of the marching band, she performed at the Orange Bowl.
She married Roger W. Dexter, who preceded her in death. Kay and Roger are the parents of Michael W. Dexter of Lafayette and Tamarah Kay Hahn (Jerry) also of Lafayette.
Kay leaves behind a granddaughter, Jessica J. Dexter Schneidt (Jason) and great granddaughters, Davaniee Cadence Bernard, Autumn Schneidt and Finn Schneidt all of Lafayette. She also leaves behind a sister, Ruth A. Laschinski of Greyslake, IL and a brother, Phillip Gwin Collins who preceded her in death.
She was president of the Gamma Theta sorority in 1967-68 and among other interests she was a Den Mother to Cub Scouts, a Mary Kay consultant, and a hostess of the USAC hospitality suite at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
As a young mother she went back to school to graduate and go on to become part of the Social Security Administration and retired to the Rio Grande Vally in Texas with her husband Les Kimbrell.
Kay married Leslie M. Kimbrell and added Leslie Bud Kimbrell of Monticello, Suzie McCord of Arizona, Sarah J. Hicks of Lafayette, and Michael Kimbrell of Champaign, IL to her family, including 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Les preceded her into heaven and all siblings survive.
Kay enjoyed the many travels with Les and became part of the United States Auto Club Timing and Scoring crew. That led her to be part of the Indianapolis 500 for a number of years.
Kay and Les enjoyed many years together in Texas and as Les’s health declined, they moved back Lafayette until his death.
Kay went back to Texas with her husband Charles Butch Mansfield of Milford, IL until his departure in death.
During that time, she started having memory issues and returned to Lafayette with her son and daughter.
Kay lived her remaining years with Alzheimer Disease at Creasy Springs in Lafayette. She enjoyed doing crafts which had been an interest all her life and being a part of sing alongs.
As we walked with her down the path of uncertainty Alzheimer brings, we were always lifted up by Mom. She never lost the twinkle in her eyes or the loving smile so many came to know and it was always a blessing for us to be with her. A loving wife, mother, sister, cousin, aunt, co-worker and friend. We love you for eternity Mother.
Tammy and I would like to invite you to a memorial service for Kay at Brown Street Methodist Church, 905 Brown Street, Lafayette, IN. Visitation will start at 3:00 pm with a small service to follow at 4:00, on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 with Pastor Ryan Treager officiating.
