Dorothy A (Steiner) Khatter, age 92, of West Lafayette, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Westminster Village. She was born on July 28, 1933, in Fowler, IN to the late Frank and Mildred (Hatke) Steiner.
In 1951, she graduated from Pine Township High School in Benton County. After high school, Dorothy and Pauline (sister) spent 6 months living and working in California. She was a Franciscan religious sister in Mishawaka, IN for 10 years. In 1963, she graduated from Creighton University with a B.S. in Pharmacy. She worked at Bill Long’s Pharmacy, Wells Yeager Best Pharmacy, Indiana Veterans Home Pharmacy and Purdue University HSSE Library. In 1971 she married Gamal Khatter and they had 1 daughter, Karen. She retired in 2001 after the birth of her first grandchild, to help with caretaking. In her free time, she volunteered with Caregiver Companion and at the elementary schools with Read to Succeed.
Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church.
Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family, bowling, attending grandchildren’s activities, PURA events, playing cards, and watching Purdue sports (if not too stressful!).
Dorothy is survived by her daughter Karen Shatava Butler (husband Ed); grandchildren Kelsey and Kadin Shatava; sisters Marge Kirk and Doris Manlief (husband Jim); brother Ken Steiner (wife lrene); sisters-in-law Erthie Steiner, Mary Ann Steiner, and Judie Steiner. And many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Mildred Steiner; brothers Lou, Bud, Leo, Don, and Ed Steiner; sisters Pauline Romanowski, Cecilia Senesac, and Ruth Long; brothers-in-law Walt Romanowski, Bob Senesac, Bob Kirk, and Charlie Long; sisters-in-law Bea and Eileen Steiner; Ex-husband Gamal Khatter; and son-in-law Mark Shatava.
Memorial contributions may be made to: St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Right-To Life, or Caregiver Companion.
Visitation beginning at 1pm until 2pm Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in West Lafayette on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Burial to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery in Lafayette.
