Deborah Y. Sweet, 74, of Lafayette, was welcomed into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at her home following a short battle with dementia. It may have attacked her mind, but it never defeated her spirit! Her husband Don and support staff from Homecare By Design were by her side when she fell asleep. When she opened her eyes, she caught her first glimpse of Jesus, face to face.
Deb was born on April 12, 1952, in Lafayette, to the late Burel and Audrey (Brooks) Skidmore. She lived her whole life in Lafayette, IN. She was a 1970 graduate of Wainwright High School and up until recent months, continued to have lunch with many of her former classmates on a regular basis.
Deb graduated from Wainwright and pursued post high school education in Boliver, MO. She came back to Lafayette after a short stint in Boliver to begin working at CTS as a supervisor over environmental areas and later finished her work career at State Farm in Ad Services. Several years later Deb received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana Weslyan.
Deb was a charter member of Elston Family Church (formerly Elston Heights Baptist Church) and actively served in many capacities over the last 55+ years. Deb loved to sing, worship, and create music. She expressed a lot of her love for her family through photography and canvas painting. But probably one of her most favorite things to do was give to her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews on birthdays and holidays.
Deb was preceded in death by her father and mother, Burel and Audrey Skidmore, her brother, Mark (Cathy) Skidmore, and her nephew, Jake Skidmore. She is survived by her husband, Don, her brother Randy (Lisa) Skidmore of Lafayette, Misty Skidmore, niece, Tara Skidmore, niece, Troy (Caitlin) Skidmore, nephew, Zach (Sarah) Skidmore, nephew, Regan (Fred) Grandlienard, niece, Halley (Ethan) Schilling, niece, and Jon Sweet, nephew, as well as a dozen plus great-nieces and nephews. They were the real prize!
Services will be held at Elston Family Church, 5 Windy Hill Drive, Lafayette, IN with Randy Skidmore officiating on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Viewing will be from 3:30pm until the time of the service at 5:30pm.
A huge shout out and thanks to ViaQuest Hospice and Homecare By Design, senior care services! Without them, we would not have been able to navigate the right care for Deb!
