Daniel Carroll Martin, 92, of Lafayette, passed away on Monday October 2, 2023, having been in failing health for the past 2 years.
He was born to Amos and Bertha Martin in a small farmhouse in Fountain County on October 23, 1930. Daniel was a 1948 graduate of Wea Highschool. Once graduated he began working at Lafayette Elevator until he entered the Army during the Korean conflict. As a Corporal in the Army, Daniel was stationed in Germany running communication lines in Division Big Red 1, serving his country from 1950-1953. On September 16, 1951, Daniel married the love of his life, Audrey Fidler Martin. They remained inseparable for over 72 years until the time of his death.
Daniel attended Purdue University where he obtained a master’s degree in education. He began his teaching career at Wabash School for the Disabled, then taught at Battleground Highschool until consolidation, where he then taught Metal Shop, Wood Shop, and Auto Mechanic’s at Harrison High School from 1970 until his retirement in 1990.
Daniel had a strong passion for all things antique, sharing his knowledge, love, and value of his large collection to his family and friends, helping some to restore their first cars. He was well known at all the steam & power shows, fiddler’s gathering, and flea markets, he attended for over 70 years. Daniel was known as “Uncle Carroll”, not only to his family, but the many students he had, who later became lifelong friends. His dry sense of humor, his ability to tell a story and educate everyone he met was unmatched only by his love and memories he made sure to create with his family.
Daniel is survived by his wife Audrey; his daughter, Patience (Brad) Hisey; 2 grandchildren, Melody and Mason Hisey; 5 great-nephews, Terry Martin Jr., Jamie Martin, Tony Martin, Craig Martin, and Bret Martin; and a great-niece, Cindy Martin-Wiggs, all with whom he shared a special bond.
